I've been using 4 of these to make a 1Mx1M landing pad. It works very well for my 450. They are thick enough not to be able to flap up in the rotor wash and they just lay on rough grass. The surface underneath doesn't need to be smooth.

They do a custom printing service so I'm thinking of getting one drawn up with an "H" circle on it.

Frankly, the ground he was landing on looked pretty much perfect to me as it was - no need for anything IMHO.

What are they like on rough undulating terrain??

I do wish heli manufacturers would make the undercarriage a good deal higher and wider. To many birds have the tail almost resting on the deck and skids which are way too narrow.
Helicopter pilots get it up quicker.

When the blue light is flashing I am kidding.

Why simplify when it is so much simpler to complicate.

The field that I fly in is used by sheep and is 50% water logged and 50% big tufts of grass. It requires wellies to walk on and is impossible to take off or land as the skids sink in and the tail rotor hits the tufts of grass. The EVA pads seem perfect - easy to carry, waterproof and easy to clean. Also, because the pads join together, you can make the pad as big as you need. 1Mx1M seems right for a 450.

As long as the ground isn't sloping overall, it doesn't matter if there is tufty grass underneath. The mats just sits flat on top of whatever is below it. If it is really tufty underneath then I think gaffer tape on the seams would be a good idea, but I haven't needed that yet. The 450 is so light the mats don't sink under its weight. For a heavier heli I would probably tape the seams to keep the surface flat.

I also think the pads would give a nice cushioning effect against heavy landings. They are designed to be used as children's safety play mats or gym mats.

For my 450 I use generic carboot liner rubber sized 140cm each side (or so) , the trouble is its weight. Pretty heavy it is. Luckily I do not always have to use it. These tiles seem nice and light, thanks for the link.
