    Ditto that from richieclarkie.

Buy new. If your budget is tight, then just get the best you can afford. Whatever it is, it'll get you hovering and flying around. Pretty much all nitro helis fly, it's just that some fly better than others, but they all fly for sure.

Join a local club with some experienced heli fliers and they'll get your bird up in the air and get you going. Joining the club before you nuy is a good idea, especially in terms of transmitter. If they run a buddy-box training system then you need a Tx that will work with the teacher's.

Bit like gyros, everyone gets their knickers in a twist over a couple of units and then you see JK flying the Trex 500 and 401 better that any on here.
      LOL
I'd love to see anyone do a hard Piro wall of death with a 401 and not have it blow out on them
      Cos it will

      Chuckle...

Guess so, but those who come on here for advice aren't really up to that standard, by the time you have started doing a bit of 3D then you pretty much know what's out there and what you want.

I must admit, having had a Raptor .30v2 and now the Sceadu .50, I totally prefer the Sceadu - easy to work on, solid spares availability and it just looks a wee bit different to what everyone else is flying.

Even in my (very) limited experience, I've progressed further with the Sceadu than I ever did with the Raptor. However, in fairness for a first heli it really doesn't matter which one you get - my humble advice is to spend the extra on the servos, gyro, engine and exhaust. That way when/if you decide to upgrade it's mostly a transplant exercise.

Good luck and one more thing, remember to enjoy it, don't get caught up in the my servo is 0.00000321 seconds faster than yours game - it (at this early stage) doesn't matter provided you're enjoying it and learning at the same time.

Get Phoenix flight sim, that way all the helis are on there and it cost you nothing to crash.

Plus with the crap weather and limited day light hours........................Just a thought

Go to your local club or the nearest club where helis are flown – and see the guys flying there.
See what they fly. There will be a crop of raptors and sceudu but the keen guys may have trex600/knight or other stuff.
You will see the difference between 30 and 50 and 90. Don’t get a 90 to learn as they crash expensive.
Crash cost on a 50 is similar to a 30. Duration (time per tank) is longer on a 30 usually.

There are a lot of good heli sitting in garages.
People try it, some are scared of them, some just don’t have time.
Ask about the local club and they will know some guy who is giving up perhaps?

I actually found a nice raptor 50 heli on bmfa complete for 400 quid, just add tx. I know what to look out for as I flew the electric 450 for a long time before.
It would have been better to see it flying but I could tell that it had hardly flown – just like the guy said.
Usually on a used heli there is something that is not ideal. On mine it had a 810g tail servo that I upgraded to a 9254 but that was about all. Once I started flying aeros I fitted a metal head block and then I bought some engine parts and upgraded my motor from a sx-h to sx-h hyper. You can find most raptor upgrades piece by piece on ebay or elsewhere – cheap leftovers from other peoples crashes (that is where the raptor scores against other designs as they are still so numerous).

For me knowing I was flying 400 quids worth rather than 800 quids worth was a significant factor in being able to progress quickly without worrying too much about the cost of a crash. I was expecting to progress quickly because I was already experienced in fixed wing and had been hovering a little electric round the garden for months.

I did think about that with raptor parts readily available on ebay and bmfa,,they are very numerous could be an advantage in that respect.
Also nice advise about enjoying it as I got to serious within the fixed wing diciplin and I left enjoyment behind when I had a 5th scale mustang ( undercarage air leaks ,transport damage,, dificult engine,,plane is now dead !!!!) I gave up fixed wing due to this!!I wont leave the enjoyment out of heli flying its a hobby after all and thats why we do it
