  • Flying in the Wind

Beautiful sunny day to day but dammed windy at the flying field. Went for it anyhow and had loads of fun hovering with 30 degrees of bank and fighting the transitional life at every gust. Did wonders for my confidence and ability to hover, if I can hover in the 100mph wind (maybe a slight exaggeration) I can hover anywhere.

Moved onto flying circuits for even more fun, rapid increase in lift on the upwind run and then banking around for the downwind and catching it as the lift disappears and it falls out the sky whilst blasting along at breakneck speed. Almost managed to maintain constant speed and height on the circuits before I ran out of batteries. Most impressed though with how well my Trex 500 handles the wind though.

Switched to the Trex 250 and had a blast with it as well, for such a small thing it did surprisingly well, bounced around a bit but generally stayed in control. Most interesting bit was trying to land on the carpet tile I'd laid on the grass to stop the tail catching. Was a case of getting over the tile and dropping pretty quickly.

Nice to know I don't need to wait for dead calm days to fly. Anybody else get out in the wind today?

Came home with two intact heli's and a big smile on my face, will seem mundane flying in calm conditions after today.

Same weather conditions yesterday here on anglesey. Flying the mCPx was great fun, almost full pitch to get any headway into the wind then with the wind it screamed along so fast it was scary. great fun though.

I suffer from the wind () here as well as murg but learnt early on to cope with it. I fly a bit higher than normal and try and arrange it so my back is against it. Yeah, the wee 250 can be a good laugh in a breeze but it does take its toll on the battery. By contrast, the 500 is a real power house. It bobs up and down in gusts but monsters through most of it. The down wind leg can be awesome

I think most people would be surprised how well our helis perform in the wind. I had 8 batteries through my 450 in quite windy conditions yesterday, after the first couple of batteries you kinda forget that its so windy and just enjoy the challenge! One end of the circuit and the 450 was getting blown into the heavens and the other it was carving through it really solidly, loved it

...and of course your 450 being FBL would help as well Spanner. Big improvement in wind, much more stable.

It is certainly more stable in the hover, but flying around it still gets buffeted around a lot, how much different this is to a fly barred 450 I couldn't comment as I have never flown one with a flybar to compare. Great fun either way I imagine :-)

Had a great laugh down at the park today, I haven't done much flying in wind so far but it was fairly gusty this afternoon, so much so that I flew the mcpx and left the 450 in the car

I learnt a fair bit today and the only damage despite maybe 4 or 5 ground kisses was 1 broken link, and I have spares

This evening the wind has dropped right off and I've been screaming the mcpx around above mine and neighbouring gardens although I did have a moment where I had a brain crash and lost orientation, I hit throttle hold about 10 feet off the ground and had to go and retrieve it from 4 doors away's garden

Guess what! Not a mark on it

                The most crash proof heli............ever!

MCPXs are fab as they bounce so well, I learnt to hover with one and I seem to go sim, MCPX, real heli in my learning curve.

Have to say when throwing the MCPX around the garden I try hard to keep it inside my fences, don't fancy doing the small ball retrieving his lost ball act with the neighbours, that and the fact their bloody dog would probably eat it.

Hoping for a not so windy day tomorrow to try and nail nose in and lazy eights with the T500.

I normally do keep within my boundary, but it was cool to see it blasting along at such speeds, my garden is quite long and narrow and the mcpx gets from one end to the other in no time, also this means flying straight away from me and turning and flying straight back which is getting a bit boring, My neighbours are all good my dad lives two doors up

Obviously i wouldn't go venturing over other peoples gardens with the 450 as i can see that could cause offence

Can anyone recomend a maximum wind speed for beginners?
Basically i'm not too confident as last time i went out in a little wind i came back with a pile of bits in the shape of a T-rex 450.

I had a lovely day flying in the wind today up until the point where I stuffed it. Last time I crashed it was windy too.....I think this may be a recurrent theme. Anyroad all that I broke was a Jesus bolt (which sheered completely) and a bent flybar. Think I'll wait until the wind dies down before I have another go.

Winds fine to fly heli's in, its gusts that cause a problem!

The amount of times Ive just gone to land a heli and a massive gust has picked it up ive lost count!

I prefer to fly in 20mph constant winds than fly on a day with no wind but 10-15mph gusts every few seconds. At least you have a known quantity then!

Flying in wind isn't the problem ... its the gusts that are the buggers that get you

I'm new and tend to call it a day if its over 15mph gusts with my 450 but thats purely speculation based on xcweather forecasts / info

Thanks for that. I will keep an eye on the weather forecast until I get I can fly it properly.
