rchelicopterfun.com is a good website for learning about helicopters, and covers most things, including programming a dx6i. I believe you can buy an ebook off the owner for about £5 that covers everything about the MSR, and most of it is probably still relevant for the MSRX.

Yes, Aileron is roll from left to right, Elevator tips the heli forwards and backwards. Pitch makes it go up and down and yaw/rudder pushes the tail from left to right. When you see people talking about Cyclic this is referring to the Aileron and Elevator controls on the right stick

Chris my friend, get yourself into a club that has experienced heli drivers. You'll learn more quickly from them than on your tod. This forum is the pups pods for all things heli related, but face to face hands on ( Oooer Matron !) will get you there faster, be a bit more expensive though. What the hell it's only money. LOL.

                I like your thinking!

Well, I gave it my best last night but couldn't achieve a flight time of more than a couple of seconds.
On the plus side, I've discovered that I'm an absolute natural at doing a trick *smug mode on* I don't know what it's called, but it's the one where you leap your heli off the ground, smash it into the nearest wall and have it come to a rest in a crumpled mess on it's side on the floor. Seriously, if there's ever a competition for that trick (anyone know what it's called? if not then may I suggest "The Murv?") then you could be looking at a future World champion *smug mode off*

OK, so it didn't go so well, in fact it was incredibly frustrating and I had to put it away in the end before it found itself in the bin...
The main problem is that I have absolutely no hand-eye co-ordination whatsoever. In fact, I'm amazed I've managed to even feed myself for all these Years as what I'd considered to be a robust link between eyeballs and hands is in fact, non-existent.

I did try to adjust the dx6i settings, and managed to turn the expo down but I'm not sure if it was applying those settings as it kept jumping to model 2.
Other snag is I just don't have enough space in my small front room, which only gives a couple of seconds to react to the approaching wall/TV/dog whereas in fact a couple of minutes reaction time would be more realistic...

So, next plan is to actually, properly read the manual, then take it into work and have a good go in the warehouse.
                Eh?

Its most likely the setup making it a pig to fly.

Just keep persevering, you'll get it im sure.

If you do get stuck im not a million miles away.

Now imagine trying to practice like that with a 50 size heli! Gets expensive extremely quickly!!

Good luck Murv, those of us that went the micro route all remember that day. There is no right or wrong way onto the hobby and at least with a micro your flying in the real world - as opposed to a sim.

Stick at it re-read the instructions and work out 100%

                      1) How to calm the heli down (used to be swash ball settings on the MSR w/flybar not sure about flybarless). The original MSR had about 4 settings you could use:
                      a) Absolute Beginner (slow swash, dual rate restricted) NOTE DX6i set to Acro mode, not Heli
                      b) Beginner (fast swash, dual rate restricted ) NOTE DX6i set to Acro mode, not Heli
                      c) Flyer (fast swash, dual rate full movement) NOTE DX6i set to Acro mode, not Heli
                      d) Modded/Custom swash for advanced flyers / full DX6i programming (Heli mode) to get the max out of the heli

                      2) Make 100% sure you are setting EXPO the correct way if you set incorrectly it increases rather than decreases sensitivity around mid stick

                      3) Make 100% sure you understand the dual rate setting again if this is wrong it will be a handful - Pictures and stuff help in the forums

Saying all that once you know 100% its as tame as it can be it will still take some patience to control a tail in hover (a hover with the tail closest to you and the nose furthest away.)

In a year you will look back and either say

                      1) Can't believe how far I have come.
                      2) I tried flying helis once

                      Good luck.

Thanks all, really appreciate the advice and support
sacko, thanks for your kind offer, if I do get really stuck I will give you a shout but, as you say, it's probably set-up not helping (see below)

Thanks for your informative post, hedge, I've learned a lot from that. Whilst faffing around last night I did work out how to get the dx6i into helicopter mode and, thinking back, it did seem a lot worse after doing that so I shall read, and understand, the programming before trying again.

What really worries me is that this is a beginner, fixed pitch heli, that is easy to master...
                        Eh?

In my short experience approx 3 yrs flying, helis is about a fine balance of Making enough Money, finding enough time and reading and watching litterally hours of vids and forum posts. There are a few gifted natural flyers who you will hear from.... "Been flying four hours now just pulled off my first inverted circuit... " yeah, well they do exist but most of us have to learn each move and this takes a long time. The good news is each step you learn is really rewarding and justifies the hours, money and effort spent.

Stick at it natural or not you will be able to fly and you will look back and wonder what all the fuss is about.

I look forward to your first - "Just Hovered tail in for a whole battery" post.

Steep learning curve huh??? Well worth sticking at it tho.

I'm no maestro with a heli but sufficiently well versed with the DX6I and terminology etc' to be able to offer help if you're still stuck and need a hand finding your way round the settings and bits, and can't be more than 10 min from you either, ( SCC end of town ) so if you fancy a cuppa and a chat etc' drop me a line and we can get together sometime soon.
