Can someone explain how a request for advice on starting a heli turned into a discussion on OAP's (old aged pilots) ?

Authur, you will have to forgive the old guys. I think its something to do with their age that they tend to drift off the subject. As for a flexible starter, not heard of anything. I've only seen these models being held at 45 deg for starting. If you are using a table, could be an idea to cut a hole in the top so that the model sits level and you access the cone from underneath. However it would be a good plan to get someone to hold the heli when starting.

I have a Vario Bell 222 which will need to be started from underneath, I intend to cut a round hole in a portable table so as to get the starter in from underneath.

I have not seen a flexible starter shaft & suspect it to be quite difficult to use if there was such a thing.

Hi Ant.
I do apologise for my age, and I am quite sure you will not make the same terrible mistakes as Dave and myself when you yourself need to start shaving.
In my defence I was under the impression that the original question had been successfully answered, I should have known had I been a younger man, that far more clever tips were in the offering.
I was humbled to learn that another helper would be required to hold the heli while you sat under the table operating the starter,being old and silly I would most proberbly have just nailed the heli to the table.
I must confess to being again confused with the mention of a flexible starter,being a retired engineer I should have known this did not just refer to your hand and elbow.
I must go now Ant', my night nurse has just arrived and is waiting to put me to bed.

Firstly I have to say that when I get to your age I hope I will still have the capability to handle rc heli's. No insult intended.

Don't you think that the model would fly better without the table being nailed to it?

Is your night nurse pretty? Maybe you should bring her down to the field to hold your model.

Hi Ant.
You most certainly touched a raw nerve with your reference to age and stupidity,
on reflection I should have left it with Daves reply, which in my opinion was a classic.
There is no point in elaborating further as I will be sure to see you at the field, I must answer your request of bringing my nurse with me, she is quite a dish, but has enough on her hands without me thinking of sharing my delights by bringing her to the field with me, you will just have to be patient for a couple more years Ant, until your age justifies you for one of your own.
Also the fact of nailing the heli to a table is to avoid the risk of the heli taking off full time,
I am sure that should this happen at my age, I would never be able to get the thing down again in one piece.
I am given to believe that Dave uses a similar system, but instead of the table, he nails his helicopters to the ground with tent pegs, we still get some buzz from just running the motors and dreaming, anything more would be unthinkable at our age.
