My recommendation would be to go for a DX6i if you're starting out. You can pick one up second hand for about £75 and it does everything you need it to do.
You won't need any more than 6 channels at this stage and if you decide to go for a bigger heli at a later date, maybe a nitro heli with a governer for example, you can decide at that stage about moving on to a better tx.
Admittedly it's a steep learning curve with a programmable transmitter and it may take you a while to get your head around it all (I've just recently had to learn from scratch myself) but if you get stuck with it, there's plenty of people on here who are very helpful and always willing to give sound advice.
Also, if you get yourself a decent flight sim (highly recommended btw) you can use your crappy tx for the sim.

im from edinburgh and still dont know glasgow very well yet so driving all these places is a bit stressfull for me..
