  • Progressing with Phoenix

    Hi all

I bought Phoenix and a DX7 a couple of weeks ago and can comfortably hover the T-Rex 450 SE model as long as I keep the tail towards me. I have made pitch and throttle curve setups in the DX7 to get normal, stunt 1 and stunt 2 flight modes, using the set-up described in Finless's 450SE videos. However, in normal and stunt 1 modes I have rudder, ele and aileron all with a +60 exp curve, in stunt 2 the control curves are linear. I can fly it in stunt 2 but it gets crazy very quickly.

I can transition to forward flight and back into the hover OK and I am not too bad with nose in hovering but I do get into problems with side on hovering, particulary with the tail pointing towards my left. Obviously I need to be be able to hold the heli still whatever its orientation but whenever I try to practice side on hovering I end up in FF.

Does anyone have any tips on how to practice this specifically? Does anyone have any comments about using exponential curves for my controls? Any help with what I should be practicing would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

instead of going full on side view try moving the tail a bit at a time and holding it there....eg from tail in to 45 degrees.... if you catch my drift

    (no pun intended)

I find the Trex 450 a bit too skittish at normal sim speed,I turned my sim speed down to 80 and find it a lot smoother to fly.

Thanks for that and for Biggles - but what is it like in reality - like the sim on 100% or more like on 80%?

I would say 80% I find my heli easier to fly than a sim....I find the sim feels 'loose' compared to the real thing....but the sim gives you a real good feel for stick positions.

I don't have a Trex 450,I fly a Dragonus. With the sim speed set at 80 it seems very close to how smooth my Dragonus flies.

OK, I think the thing to practice is lazy 8s. Flying in the transition zone between hover and full forward flight takes good collective control to stay at a constant height and flying an 8 means all orientations of the heli relative to the camera position are covered. Once I've sussed if forwards I can go for backwards, then forwards inverted and backwards inverted. That lot should keep me busy

              Thanks all
