  • Sceadu Evo 50 with OS50 Hyper Engine

I'm just starting out and was hoping for some wisdom. I've done quite a lot of on-line research now and was planning to gun for:

Sceadu Evo 50 with OS50 Hyper Engine
The JR PCM 9XII TX Only + Receiver (or Fut FF9??)
    Helicommand 3D

Is this a good selection; or
    1) OTT;
    2) the wrong choice for a beginner;
    3) is there a better choice?

I've done about 50hrs on latest version of the XTR Simulator with the Evo 50, in both still and relatively high wind settings (10-15mph) with thermals + buffeting enabled. I can fly it quite well (well at least tail-in anyway) and can now hover well, do tail-in circuits, do autos and flair land - I've learned the hard way that landing through the rotor-wash (with a very still wind) is not a good idea! I'm just getting to grips with flying side-on. However, nose-in I think will take some getting used to.

Is this (XTR practise) good preparation, or is the simulation practice making me too over confident? In other words, how realistic is the Sim practice vs. the real thing.

    Thanks

does your version of reflex have the card swipe facility?

that automatically debits £200 from your account when you crash.

only joking with you ......but that does make a big difference when learning.

the evo was a good model but not so popular these days.

    have you joined a club?

check out what the locals are flying for best help with setup.

      Club

I'm still checking out clubs. I live 4 miles from London Bridge so large open spaces are not so common - and flying a nitro in Hyde Park might not go down too well with the tourist. So I'm checking out Croydon as I think there is a club there - although the drive through the traffic on a Saturday / Sunday is a 'mare. I've decided that strapping a .50 onto my GSX 1300R (m.bike) wouldn't really be practical (although probably entertaining for passers by!). So drive I must. How can I find out if there is a closer club to SE22?

Another biker... there must be a few on here. Suzuki SV1000S myself!

There are, I believe, a few London clubs. BMFA club list info from Stumpy is good advice.

Absolutely bang-on choice of heli, transmitter and engine make.

Going for a 50 straight off is ok, but an OS37 (30 size version of teh Sceadu) might be more sensible for a beginner.

The more power they have, they quicker they are, which means they can get you out of trouble quicker, but can also get you into trouble quicker.

Finish it off with a JR R77S PCM synthesised receiver, a 2500mAh NiMh battery pack, a Futaba GY401 gyro with 9254 tail servo, 3 x Futaba 3152 or 9001 servos on the controls and a 3001 on the throttle and you'll have a very nice starter heli.

The blades that come with the Sciddly-Doo are fine for learning, so no need to spend mega-bucks on alternatives.

              clubs

Thanks I will take a look. When I searched the web all i could find are clubs is north london - might as well be in a west coast scottish island given the traffic (issues) between south and north london. Fighting my way through 4 million cars (in a metal box with a wheel at each corner) and police check points (I have to go though the City) on a sat or sun doesn't do it for me.

I like the SVs. Is it a twin? My mate had the 600, sounded great until he resculpted the side of a jap granny box (honda civic) with it. I'm not sure they ever managed to retrieve his forks and disk calipers from the door panel. At least he was still laughing even after the casualty department failed to spot three broken bones in his left arm and a broken rib. Must be hard to miss when one arm is 2 inches shorter than the other!

The 'Busa just begs you to wave goodbye to your license - after all I say to myself, I have a good chance of outrunning the o'bills pursuit heli if push came to shove. Sorry, I'm turning this into an MCN Forum.

                Thanks T.M. Helicommand?

Thanks T.M. I was kinda tinking of trying the Helicommand 3D stability gyro gadget thingy. It is built in Germany I think, so it must be good, no? I followed a link from the Heliommand website to a popular video web site to see a demo. However, the last vid showed a man taking his hands of the tx. Ok fine, that's what Helicommand is supposed to allow. Well the heli kinda self hovered for about 10 secs then fell to the deck like a lead parchute. Some smoke and flames. Are servos and gyros supposed to look like a Salvador Dali painting?

Heli command is a waste of money.....!!!!!!! As it practically flies the chopper for you.....It means you will never learn to fly properly.

For example you fly with it for a while then take it off, you then have to learn all over again!!!

                    Thanks Biggles, but..

Could you not use Helicommand like a 'buddy link' when things get real ugly? Or is it really like learning in an automatic car, but eventually having to bite the bullet and learn to do it properly in a manual?

Everyone seems to use a head lock or rate gyro to manage tail yaw these days? Is Helicommand not just a headlock gyro + a pitch gyro + a roll gyro ie a gyro that helps manage the in-flight 'attitude'?

Just get a Futaba GY401 gyro, with a 9254 tail servo, some half decent (£25ish) control servos and you'll be fine. They'll do you for learning, and well into your intermediate stages of RC helis.

Oh, did I say that already?

                        No

T.M. I'll take that as a 'no' to Helicommand.

The helicommand or Co-pilot for that matter removes you from the feel of the heli's cylic. Its okay to use a HH gyro as a beginner it gives you one less thing to get focused on as much if it a normal rated gyro. Stay away from any heli stabilzation gadgets.
                          Cheers

Ok. Thanks. Clearly a 'thumbs down' to stabilisation gadgets - the technical occult!
