Seasame, was it an overcast day making orientation harder than normal?
BTW do you really use the 9650 tail servos in your 50's? (just that is what our sig says)
Really sorry to hear the story of your crash, I have had a few majors but I have never written off a hyper and gyro (maybe bent the cooling fines and stripped the servo gears or broken the cases, but not written them off.)
I think I have got the art of crashing fairly good as most of mine end up with hard arrivals with little blades speed and i just do a shaft hear and there.
The key is level and with little blade speed (i.e. throttle hold).
