  • Newbie question about Field Batteries

    Hello folks,

Have been reading and searching the forums. Have got to the point where I crash less than batteries run out, so I'm trying to sort out a field charging battery, here's what's i learnt searching - am i on the right track?

1)You can charge from your car, but its not a deep cycle battery so risk it dies.
2)You can charge from spare car battery, they are cheap, but it will die fast.
    3) Need to use a leisure battery that can deep cycle.
    4) Needs to be sealed so car doesnt melt on the way to field.
    5) Should be as many AH (amp hours) as budget allows.

Questions I could do with some help on

Does the chemistry matter? lead acid / gel packs etc?
How would I calculate what rate to charge the leisure battery on?

    Thanks for help / corrections!

    Chris.

I use a 110 mah leisure batt as it can deep cycle.

A normal lead acid car batt will die.

I find even a decent leisure batt will not do many lipo recycles until it really slows down.

If you run the engine whilst charging I guess there will be no problem whilst charging a lipo. Unless you leave the lipo in the engine bay, drive off & have the car catch fire like one of our club members did

I have a Towsure case for the battery, have added a couple of sets of banana posts & I find it mostly works.

I can't answer your questions, however, if you contact JohnJ, he is giving away free 38Ah, 12V batteries. Furthermore, he's not to far from you (or I).

      See his thread here.
