  • mSR and DX6i

    Hi folks,

my 1st real question on the forum so please be gentle.

I've got a Twister CP Gold which I can get into a stable hover (just) and I'm having a lot of fun with it and still haven't bent anything (yet ) . From reading the forum I should really be spending a lot more time flying it and practising on a simulator BUT the Tx with the Twister isn't compatible with the Phoenix sim, which seems to be the preferred one to get so I'm thinking:

Buy a DX6i and Phoenix for practising when the weather is pants (most days) and also buy a Blade mSR BnF to fly indoors when I get bored with the simulator. The indoor area is a good 30' x 20' in size. I think I could also convert the Twister to run with the DX6i, maybe a new Rx?

I do have a 9Zap Tx which could be used at sometime and converted to 2.4 Ghz but I really think I'll just sell that on and buy into modern hardware.

Is this a reasonable way forward?
    best regards
    Kev

Sounds perfect to me, as I went a slightly different way to you but have ended with the same result.

Started with an Mcx, then bought a CX2 (both RTF) and now have a DX6i and an Msr as well. This is all in the space of 3 weeks!

The Msr is great fun, I don't have quite the room you do but I can still get it zipping about, and it bounces well rather than breaking when you get a little adventurous. The DX6i options can soften it all down or tighten it all up with just a few flicks through the option menu.

I would recommend any newbie who thinks he will want to stick with it to get the DX6i, it is relatively cheap for what it does and will be useable for quite a few of your prospective Heli's, at least until you are buying something which would be classed as 'expert' The Msr is also good, it is easy enough to fly that you don't get turned off flying, is challenging enough to, well, provide a challenge and is also relatively cheap.

I think somebody on here is selling a DX6i second hand, I will see if I can find the link.

The DX6i comes with a Rx which might be compatible with the Twister? could someone verify that?

i should imagine you can put pretty much any rx in the storm as long as the servo's work with it and the rx will actually fit.

The Twister CP Gold is almost identical to Blade400, it uses std 3 wire servo's/gyro, so will work with any receiver, including a Spectrum one for DX6i - you will have to setup the radio (servo reverse etc) so this would take an evening of fiddling, and you will need a pitch gauge and probably a few minutes of time from an expert to check over your setup, test fly and trim with new tx.

I'd say your plan to get a DX6i/Phoenix sim/MSR would be absolutely perfect, I'd suggest you try to swap the AR6200 receiver which comes with the DX6i for an AR6110e which is much smaller and more suitable - the shop will almost certainly do this swap for no money, as the AR6200 is a more expensive receiver, if not you can ebay the AR6200 or sell it on forum, and should get the money back on AR6110e. The AR6200 is OK but two lumps so a bit awkward to fit to a small heli, and doesn't have the hold light on the AR6110 which I think is better.

The MSR will fly superbly in your area, and is a stable and great fun heli and really useful as an orientation trainer for your CP heli.

Thanks GTTRIS, I was unsure of the differences between the Storm and CP Gold models and it might of made a difference to your response

                      Update:

I bought a mSR, Dx6i and Phoenix from Midland Helicopters on the way home today

                      4 batteries on charge

Phoenix installed on my Samsung Netbook so I can use it in hotels etc. I do recall someone saying they couldn't install the simulator on their netbook. All I had to do was:
                      a. copy the DVD onto a memory stick, quicker than transferring the data across the network lol
                      b. increase the screen resolution from 1024x600 to 1024x768, this means the screen pans around a bit but not significantly.

Had a problem getting the Dx6i to be recognised by Phoenix eventually realised that the radio must have batteries installed BUT must be left turned off

                      Let the games begin

                          Update:

I've now put about 10 batteries through the mSR and damn I'm impressed A few clicks of trim and the hover is ridiculously stable, hands off for 20-30 seconds and it drifts a couple of feet lol. My only minor, almost silly, quibble is I can't absolutely trim out the rudder, without correction it will turn 360 degrees in maybe 90 seconds, I need 1/2 clicks on the Dx6i. I also miss the ratchet on the throttle, maybe the throttle movement can be tightened up in the Dx6i (need to read the manual and take the back off of the Tx).

                          Two questions:

using the 4 lipo battery charger that comes with the mSR can I leave the batteries in the charger even when they are fully charged? i.e. does it trickle charge after fully charging the batteries?. Last time I was charging batteries they were Ni-Cads

I'd like to transfer the small trim adjustments into the sub trim values, is there anyway to read what the main trim values are so I can tranfer them into the sub trim settings?

                            Hi Kev,

I've found that with my MSR each battery varies a little bit so sometime I need a bit of trim and other times I don't.

                            Cheers Chris.

similar to my findings Chris The trim offsets aren't significant, I think the alieron trim is the one that has the most variation (a couple of clicks) which is down to the minor variation in power output I guess.
