  • still need training gear?

Iv been attempting flat figure eights over that last few outings with the raptor 30, without training gear. Having discarded it after learning to hover tail in and move about abit, all tail in stuff.

Just wondering what the general concensus is with when to take the gear off, as im thinking of putting it back on!!
Nearly lost the heli yesterday because of overcorrecting whilst turning, the training gear would have saved the heli if it went in but without it, if i never recovered it, would have been a goner, and I think I sucked £10 worth of my levi's up where it really doesn't belong

    what we think?

    cheers

        Hi Simon,

No i dont think you need them at all!!! the fact you openly say that you recovered and saved it says to me your ok with out them, besides they wont save you from alot of things they only do this when you get lucky in fact i feel they can cause you to go in when its a close one because they catch the ground and bam! in you go, ive done it myself several times
Once past hovering bin them they really dont do anything other than effect the handling of the heli in FF.

cheers Alex, always good to get a vote of confidence I just didn't no whether I was being cocky by taking them off and then bin it. Brave is best then

              That's a lot of denim; I only pay £5 a pair! JK

+1; don't be putting the spider pod back on just yet. A little extra height will generally give you more thinking and reacting time to properly fly out of difficult situations.

How long did it take you to get to the hovering and moving around stage Simon?
I've only just got mine and done 2 battery packs, and no where near hovering yet.

I found that I had much more control of the heli with the training gear off then on and took mine off as soon as I could hover and land lightly.

Training gear wont save your heli in a decent crash - its there to stop it tipping when learning to land and takeoff. Once you nail that, IMHO remove it.

                    +1

If you can hover, consistently take off and land gently then you're past the stage of needing TG IMHO. Plus the helis look and fly much better without them.

I think this timespan depends on the size of both your balls and your bank balance. I've been flying my 500 since 13 April 2009. I have thus far flown it for a total of 265 minutes and am just getting into lazy eights.

Once off, leave them off. The heli handles better without them and if you crash properly then the training gear won't save you. They might prevent a minor tipping-over but that's about it. If you can hover, move and land then you should fly your heli without the training gear.

I never had training gear on my blade 400 I just didnt like the way my honey bee felt with them on and I as never really flew the honey bee more crashing which is why I got the Blade 400. I also found with small helis they can dig in and tip the heli over when you try to lift up.

If you can land and do small flights then you dont need them. And if you nearly lost it in a turn then the legs may well of broke off and made it worse.

I've been flying all my indoor helis (GAUI H200, 100 3 blade, BuzzFlies) without t/g for ages. However, I've got *very* cut down t/g on my G5s.

It's basically so cut down that the balls are just outside the skids. It's not for crashing, it's because it helps with orientation, and from certain perspectives it's like an artificial horizon. Some people apparently put fluoro material on the skids for a similar effect.

I'm close to taking it off, but every now and again I get myself into a position where it's helped, and it seems to help me relax.

It may also help with quaggy landings...

Thinking about it, I also use it for testing in the back yard. This is because it's pretty turbulent out there, and it may mean I can get away with slightly more rough/hurried landings.
