  • Nose-on Hovering

    Hello all,

Any tips on how to best learn to hover nose-in and then fly the model towards yourself?

I have a sim (Realflight) & have sometimes done this, but when it's real money after a crash!

When hovering side on or slightly towards me I "look at the back of the pilot's head" as someone suggested to me, but this is a lot more difficult completely nose on.

I have tried thinking "heli right" " heli left" etc, but this takes time & usually ends in a crash on the sim as it's all gone t*ts up by then.

Someone has suggested turning my back to the heli & looking over my shoulder, but that seems a bit awkward.

Or shall I just go & hire an instructor? Any on this site near Worcester area?

    Any suggestions really appreciated. Thanks

They always say hire an instructor - and for a good reason. It works.

if the heli is facing u and you are looking to keep it level in a hover, as the rotors dip left or right, just move the stick left or right TOWARDS the dipping blades. If you have to think "left is right and right is left" or whatever system u use, you may find u r too late.

Find a system that is a little more instinctive for you. then practice on your sim.... There'll be lots of pilots here that can offer some assistance, good luck!

Looking over your shoulder sounds like a crash waiting to happen!!
The method I used was to work progressively round from tail in - trying to get a steady hover as you go.
Once I got happy with side on on both sides then I practised nose in and if it went out of my comfort zone, I used the rudder to quickly get it back to tail in and them calm down and try again.
A good way to learn nose in is to remember to 'support' the dropping side of the heli. i.e. if the heli moves to your right, move the stick right to support it or lift it back up as it were.
Try it all on the sim first until you can nose in hover or, at least, get back to your comfort zone quickly and confidently.
Once you have sorted that you will probably find flying toward yourself will kind of click into place.
      Best of luck!

Well I am learning myself and I have been using the RADD box idea where you try not to leave a foot square box on the floor - you would have to look it up (try RADD heli lesson in google)

Really you should think back to how you learned to hover normally and go back to the start again but with nose in.
The older I get, the faster I was!

          Okay nose in....

I fly around doing figure 8's but on the cross over point have the heli facing you. now just get used to it flying into face you and then contiune the turn
back into the 8. If that makes sense get used to it facing you for a few seconds. Then once your happy with that fly around slowly and bring it to face you. Start these at like 30ft the height helps.

This will get you used to which way the heli will turn when facing you.

Thats how I started nose in and can now land nose if required.

Some people go back to basics put the training gear back on learn from the ground up with the heli facing them.

I learnt nose in as soon as i learned to hover

I got used to doing full 360 degree piros at say 20 feet in a steady hover, when i was happy doing those i would half piro to nose in and hold it as long as i could then half piro back to tail in hover

            Worked very well for me

Really appreciate the tips guys. I'm not yet really into fig 8s as I think (you will tell me if I'm wrong) that I should be able to control it nose in first. But really the two things that stand out are - "support the dipping blade", I like that - and do it all at some height to be able to piro to tail on if needed.

Keep the tips coming. Pay for instruction sounds like good advice too. Any around Worcester?

              Thanks all

When I learned nose-in I went back to basics. I put the training skids back on and learned as I did tail-in. Worked perfectly for tail-in.

As with tail-in it gets you used to getting the heli light on the skids, then onto lifting off the ground a couple of inches and so on.

Plus you can say you did a nose-in landing before most people that are learning nose-in.

Instead of thinking left and right, I got a good tip from the model club I just joined - clockwise -anticlockwise, and it works for me.

You could use the plank flier terminology "Stick under wing" - if the nose in heli leans to your right, push the cyclic stick to the right to prop it back up again, and vice-versa.
                          Cheers,

That's Sunday sorted then. Thanks everyone, going to try some of these if the weather is ok, if not it will have to be on the sim again.

                              I'll keep you posted

                              Thanks again
