Century Hawk Pro 0.30 SC Engine

Well I went down to Hobbystores in Southampton with my .30 SC Engine from the Century Hawk Pro that I mentioned in one of the other threads. I was looking at electric helicopters and also getting some tools/essentials for the IC helicopter. The main one being a wrench to remove the nut off the crankshaft however we didn't have much luck with that (found a thin walled socket in a tin of sockets at home that did the job). However the guy that I think manages/owns the store had a look at the engine for me and confirmed my suspicions that the engine had rust damage. He informed me about the IC fuel being a certain mixture of alcohol/oil that it is hydroscopic and draws water/moisture into the piston chamber and causes rusting. We had a look it out in daylight and the wall of the piston has rusting on it aswell as the piston sleeve. You can clearly see it on the top end of the engine but it's a bit harder to see anything when looking in from the front end (last few shots). He seemed to think that the crankshaft bearings would also be rusted aswell. His advice was to bin the engine and get a new one as repairs to it wouldn't be viable/economical.






What do you guys think? Paper weight? Repairable? Or nothing wrong with it?

He said that it's probably been stored away for long periods and had no after run oil applied to the carb/glow plug hole.

Probably the owner stacked the helicopter (lots of other damage that I discovered post purchase) and stored it away and then decided to sell it on eBay to some unsuspecting customer. This helicopter according to the seller was RTF aswell

bin the SC 30 and get an OS 32 for it.

So you don't think it's worth getting new bearings, piston sleeve, and cleaning the piston up or getting a replacement piston?

OS 32 is far better engine overall vs the SC....

Yeah if I do get a replacement it most likely will be OS as from what I've seen on forums/pictures etc they seem to be the most common/popular and I guess with reason too.

So was the general concensus on this engine that it wasn't worth keeping? It's just I'm going through a paypal dispute/claim at the moment as the guy who sold me the heli listed it as RTF. So far I've found:

* Bent feathering shaft
* Bent tailboom
* Non-genuine homemade pushrod that connects from swashplate to bell-hiller. Threaded one end and pushed into a ball link and glued other.
* One cracked, and many worn ball links
* Wood screw in aluminium engine mount
* Bent shaft that connects to canopy standoffs (just being picky there)
* Missing bolts, nuts on muffler and tail rotor gearbox
* Missing retaining screw on servo head/arm

While some of those are trivial others aren't.
Now if this engine is naff then that is just the icing on the cake.

tbh i wouldn't call all that trivial Darryl. dont forget you would probably of being trying to hover this at eye level 20/30 feet in front of yourself, it doesn't bear thinking about!!
if i were you i would be letting this chap have his helicopter back and at the very least getting a full refund.
then buy from here there are some very good deals about at the moment and a little raptor 30(or even a 50) would be a far better choice.probably not what you want to hear but i have a feeling this heli will drain your wallet and worse enthusiasm for the hobby

The problem is boggy that I've stripped the helicopter down at the moment and is in peices. I could reassemble I guess if it paypal issues me a full refund and instructs me to return it. However shipping back to Falkirk in Scotland won't be cheap so I'll be 25gbp out of pocket for that aswell. Not only that but I've also bought a load of spares already from Century. Probably should of disputed earlier before buying the spares.

Bought a gear puller and it fits nicely over the clutch / flywheel and I've started to drive the bolt into the crankshaft but it won't budge

Will it need heat to loosen it off?

If its rusty then some penetrating oil might help to loosen it.

If not then try heating it up. (dont set the oil on fire)

I've saturated it in WD40 but not budging.

Soaking in petrol overnight can help to clean up engines.

But you need to make 100% sure that all the petrol is gone before you attack it with the blowtorch.

Yeah I heard that petrol and flames don't mix ^_^.

What I think the owner has done has gone OTT with the threadlock as I can see overrun onto the clutch plate.

If its threadlocked then head it up and it should help to break the threadlock.

As long as the puller the the right one then you should be able to crank the nut pretty hard to pull it off. Your unlikely to break the puller.

I think you would be better off reassembling it and sending it back, loosing £25 is going to cost you a lot less in the long run.
As for the parts you bought sell them on like on the bay or bmfa web site.
