If the copterx was a patch on one of the Align models why would people pay 4 or 5 times the price for align? beacuse of the difference in quality mate, its a lesson some people learn the hard way You get what you pay for simple as that...

To be honest - 6 months ago I would have agreed with the guys above. I would have said, no don't buy cheap copies, just buy Align and just buy scorpion motors and ESCs, and just buy hitec or jr servos, only buy futaba gyros, hell just spend £400 on it and be done with it, if you crash it you'll need to spend another £100. But you gotta pay that for quality right?

        But now I STRONGLY disagree.

Now my father has changed my mind for me! - he decided he just wanted to build a 450 size heli to see how they work and go together - so he picked up a HK450 kit for about the same price as a double vodka red bull, cheap metal gear servos £5 each, emax motor and ESC for about £25 and I gave him a Futaba GY240 to try.

It went together sweet - I told him to rip it apart and threadlock anything metal to metal, and make sure everything was nice and tight, and he did so. Took him a few weeks of fiddling but I left him to it. Once it was built I set up the TX for him, trimmed it and hey presto there is a 450 heli built for under £100.

How does it fly? Amazingly! I was totally amazed it got off the ground at all considering how cheap it all was - but lo! It actually flies, and it flies half decently too! It's no REX450 Pro, no kidding - I am no Alan Szabo or anthing but even though there is a bit of slop here and there, it's bloody fantastic for learning on. The kits are so cheap - you don’t bother buying spares at all, just buy a few kits and you've got more spares than you can shake a stick at!

I am converted. My gyro cost more than his entire heli, and frankly for the money I would rather set up three of HK450s including one as a scale and learn like that. You crash one? Who cares - fir one of the other ones up. No down time, you can fix one while your flying the other two. THIS IS THE FUTURE OF LEARNING ladies and gents - no down time learning. None of this - "crashed last weekend, waiting for parts, cant afford a new bit of this that or the other yet".

My days of spending a fortune on the expensive parts that everyone on the forum says to get are over. No more Align or the like, no more scorpion motors and ESC for £80, no more HS-5065MGs at £80 for three, no more £100+ gyros. I am happy now to experiment, the oldman has opened my eyes to the fact there is a whole world of stuff out there at amazing prices that actually does 90+% of what the silly money branded stuff does - the question I ask my self is is that 10% extra performance worth in same cases a 500% price increase???? Answer is no, not for my flying.

It's a revelation - you can now enter this hobby and enjoy it with a proper 3D belt drive 450 size heli for £peanuts, you can build 10 of them for the price of a kitted out Trex 450 Pro - unless your a bonkers 3d pilot - would you notice? Why bother with the Trex? Just enjoy the cheap way - have more fun, crash and learn without hurting your wallet, experiment with scale or whatever. Like I always say nice safe fun - only this time it doesnt cost much more than a night out in town to do it! Amazing!!!

I wouldn’t say buy something properly expensive for a learner Heli as yea the crashes will cost a bomb, which is why I bought an esky K3 as my first Cp heli and I'm glad I did!

I've had my experience of quality as bad as the copterx etc, a walkera 60 and it put me of rc Helis for 4years! I just wouldn’t want anyone to make the same mistake but its entirely your choice! Get something middle of the range! Not bottom, even for a first cp Heli!

I agree. IMHO, I think I would rather spend a touch more on a s/h 450 V1 or 450 s and have the peace of mind that, in 6 months time, I can still get spares and not just from one outlet in HK but my local model shop too.
              Cheers, Lee.

Theres probably alot of other guys like me on here that have bought the cheap stuff, and yeah maybe they do fly ok, but for how long? from my experiance they wear out really quickly, and very soon that small amount of slop is now a huge amount of slop. They seem to just produce one problem after another, you look to constantly upgrade it to improve it, the heli ends up standing you in the same if not more money than going straight out and buying something like a rex.
save your money, keep an eye on the sale section here and ebay and buy a second hand rex or a mini titan.
                buy right, buy once!

Most of us have been there and bought the cheapo stuff and wished we hadn't. A heli is under stress and working flat out pretty much all the time its in the air so you need engineering you can trust, save til you can afford a 2nd hand trex v2 like the others have suggested. There's plenty up for sale all ready to fly and at good prices now the 450 pro has been released.

Virtually everybody knows a little about the trex 450 so you won't be short of help should you have problems and there's a wealth of knowledge out there about it.

Copter x = cheap rip off of the trex 450 with low grade aluminium, bearings and iffy machining which will give you slop and ultimately let you down as well as making flying harder.

Trex 450 = pretty much sorted, dependable and the standard that others should at least attain to.

Wait for the new trex 450 sport to be released, it might come in at a very reasonable price.

Well - got the CopterX 450AE and am very pleased. Its waaaay better engineered and more precise than the HK450 and only a few dollars more expensive. There is little slop in all of the metal bits, and the bearings seem smooth enough to do the job for now - which is all very very impressive for $59.

Fixxer - have you bought a CopterX 450AE? Might be worth biying one before slagging it off too much. For the money it really is unbelieveable what you can get for now. To put it in to perspective the CopterX entire kit did not cost much more than just a metal swashplate for my dragonus......
