  • Need advise for the first heli.

Hi everybody... first of all thanks for taking your time to read this and help me.
So, i've been brownsing here and asking a few questions for a week or so.
I want to buy my first nitro heli to fly scale. I am a full scale pilot and just love helis so much that i want to fly R/C ones now. I've a CX2 and flying on Phoenix sim for about 2 months now, its ok on scale helis but performance helis on phoenix are to quick, they are set up for 3D but i don't know how tame them for nice and gentle flight? any good advice here ?
I would love to go to a club and spend time there learning, but the thing is that i am flying to Brazil on June 22nd for 6 months and where i am going to there's no clubs. So i need to buy all these before i leave and will take you guys as my instructor.

After many msgs i've decided to go for the Raptor 50 Titan. The thing is i wan't to buy right to buy once. I looked on midlands website. They have a nice one Ecureuil Fuselage + Raptor 50 Titan Mechanics + Engine for £476.99 i would remove the fuzz while learning and get just a canopy. But as i see the engine on this combo isn't that good as the main bits are plastic. Or buy Raptor 50 Titan SE Combo for £450.00 which have a Raptor 50 Titan SE kit + Thunder Tiger Redline 53H Engine, RL Highflow 3D Muffler, Zero Alpha Governor, TT V2 Carbon Main Blades 620mm. I can buy the fuselage later.

The point is i don't want to buy more than i will use like 3D bits, but don't want to buy something cheaper and have to spend a lot on upgrades.
Can some one please show me the way. What's the best one to buy and the best aspec to have a nice and stable flight for fuselages? what bits can i change to get there?
Also, sorry my question guys but do i need a governor? what its really used for?

    Thanks all.
PS: i hope one day i can help someone else as you do guys!!!

There is nothing wrong with the Raptor 50 mechanics, I had one as many people did for a long time, again the plastic parts are not a problem, as when you have a spill you will be needing to replace them and the plastic parts come up alot cheaper than the metal SE equivalents.

Engine power again while your learning its not going to be a problem, you may want to put in a decent engine when it gets time to put the shell back on. but even then you dont need excessive power for scale flight, just enough to comfortable carry the frame and fusilage around.

To make them stable you just need to get the TX and heli setup properly some expo etc to soften the movments, the standard paddles are heavy enough to give a good stable hover and your away.

As for govnor no you wont really need one, they are there to try and keep a constant headspeed while doing aerobatic manouvers.
    All the best
    Tony.

Rappy 50 mechanics are fine. Parts everywhere & reasonably priced.

A plastic frame & decent engine will do anything you will want from them. TT or OS engine.

so would I, so would I...

I've never been to Brazil. But from what I've heard, flying a big smoking nitro heli where everybody can see it may turn out to be not as good idea as it may sound. Unless you bring bodyguards.

        My recommendation:
Spend the 6 months with a simulator. If you -must- bring a heli, get an electric 450. Buy two kits, lots of spares. If somebody comes to rob you, don't argue. You've got the other one.

You can do nice and gentle flight even with the wildest 3D heli in Phoenix. It's all about practise ...

I think i understand your thoughts about Brazil. The TV shows just the bad side of what happens there. But i assure you its not like they paint.
Instead of rob me people would stop and watch. But no, i will be flying it in the middle of nowhere, also i woudn't take the risk as a newbie flying it in the crownd. Could hurt someone.
Thanks for the hint, i will keep trying with Phoenix.

std raptor 50 or titan forget about the se you don't need the bling
os50 , easy to tune and reliable (run on the rich side with a min of 10%nitro 18% or more oil)
some good servos and a good gyro
            go 2.4ghz with the radio
and a good all round pipe zimmerman/hatori, you don't need a pipe for max power just make sure the pipe isn't to large in size so it will fit into the scale body you wish to use
            Hirobo Turbulence D3
            a bunch of bls servo's and a 701 gyro

I'd also suggest waiting, but for different reasons.

Time on the sim is never wasted. There's always a fresh heli ready to go. The same can't be said of real life, especially if you're going somewhere with poor training support and parts support. You also have to work out how to get a large and quite delicate machine there and back again, and understand the local regulatory structure for flying them.

While I'd rather not fantasize about the bandit situation, I suspect "Middle of nowhere, Brazil" would not be somewhere I'd be keen on taking an expensive machine, alone.

that's why I don't watch TV in the first place :-)
well one of my colleagues at work is Brasilian, from Rio. That doesn't mean that -I- know anything about the place.

BTW if I wanted a reliable heli, I wouldn't get Raptor. My own has been nothing but trouble, I gave up on it.
Maybe I have learned a thing or two in the meantime, but in comparison my 600 NSP flies like clockwork.

                  Just to add my 2p.

I have never had such a reliable Heli as the Raptor.

Only time I have to do anything to it is when I have placed it into the earth at a large velocity

Only alteration I would advise is to use the complete Align tail hub as it is a direct replacement and has thrust bearings in the grips. See here: Fast Lad Performance

                  Hope this helps.

                  Cheers

I fly a Rator 50 and I love it, it was a bit of a handful when I had the original TT50 engine & exhaust, I was constantly playing around with the mixture and hardly getting to fly, but I brought an OS 50 hyper and a zimmerman pipe and it's been flawless ever since.
I got some carbon blades to replace the woodys and I have to say it performs brilliantly. I am still at the early learning stages and it suits me fine, the spares are readily available & fairly cheap, it's very stable even in a stiff breeze and very forgiving.
I've had a few lessons using a variety of different heli's but I've not flown anything yet that I'd trade for mine.
I've never had any regrets about buying a Rappy, and would recomend it to anyone as a learning machine.

for a first time heli pilot...i would say, spend some time with flight sims first. then go get even a small 4rc coax heli.. that should get you on a great start.
