and first prang with a G5...

I'm actually not too upset - if at all. More feel dumb for cutting the activities short.

I ran a pack through with training gear on (as I've never been outside before). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-KIgYa2Vg4"]YouTube - Outrage G5 with Training Gear on 20090502[/ame]

Then pulled the training gear off: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4h89LDRW47U"]YouTube - Outrage G5 without Training Gear on 20090502[/ame]

    Nothing particularly exciting there.

I guess I then got a bit bored with hovering, and got a bit beyond myself. Dumb, as I know from Phoenix that disorientation is a big problem - which is what happened. One planted G5 later... (see picture of silly grin and broken G5.)

I went in reasonably hard (?), but the damage doesn't seem that bad. Very smashed up blade, very bent mainshaft, stripped main gear, bent flybar, damaged velcro strap (!?!). Bizarrely, the feathering shaft seems ok.

I guess the damage is down to luck, but it seems to have come out pretty well. (£35 ?)

I've now swapped the head, drive gears, etc from my 'spares-kit' G5, and it should soon be set-up again.

It was a calm day, but the G5 was really nice in the hovering stuff I did - though there were a few things to sort out. Given that I doubt I did a particularly thorough or gifted job on set-up (cowboy would be a good description - esp with the DS760 set-up), this says a lot of good about the G5.

In fact, the only negative thing I can say about it is that I felt the need for the 2nd 'spares-kit' one. Which I bet I'll equip & fly too...

Were you flying that low when you lost it?

I find flying low easyer, as you can see what your doing better, but if you make a mistake your screwed.
Try and practice flying alot higher up, then if you get it wrong you stand a better chance of saving it (or at least hitting hold)

In the second vid it looks very stable in the hover, so you cant have done a bad job on the setup

Well if I could hover like that I would be very happy.

Shame about the crash, but I crash land on most flights but I am getting better so keep it up.

Its always fun flying outside, I love a breeze to a fairly strong wind to fight with, I blame Phoenix for that, lol.

I don't think anyone progresses forward without the odd ding dong here and there, so put it down to experience.

As for height if you find yourself comfortable at around 5-7ft high it offers a few precious seconds to correct a bad move, or at worst offers time to kill the throttle, usually at that height a hard semi-crash landing can often survive with little else then blade damage.

Stick with it, relax, and if in doubt don't, just gently ease yourself into positions which require more concentration and don't rush.

            You'll do just fine Bro.

              Thanks for the kind replies.

I've got a fairly unconventional experience-set. While I'm a complete beginner outdoors (~25 minutes in total...), and that's why I posted in the beginners section; I've got 100+ hours hovering small CPs (GAUI 100s, 200s) indoors, plus a lot with BuzzFlys (4#3s). I've also flown this G5 for 5-10 hours indoors

So, low down and close up is what I'm used to. This wasn't the problem - though I did nearly hit the ground a few times, as the throttle response was less than I expected. [I reckon this is a set-up issue, it's a decent 6S config, and I'd expect to have loads of power for what I was doing. I've got some ideas to play with.]

I was playing around, and ended up with the heli 15-20 feet up, maybe 50 yards away, and wondering which way it was pointing... A dumb situation to get into, and well outside my (non-Phoenix) experience.

If I'd stuck to what I'd gone there to do, I'd probably have been fine. Though I was getting too cocky in general...

                It lives

Set-up and flew (indoors) the G5 on Monday. It seems at least as good as before. Cool.

[Which is nice, as I did a better job on this head.]

Ordered the replacement parts, which should cost out at ~£26.50 . £20 of which is the blades. (Although one blade seems unscathed.)

I can't really complain about how well G5s crash.

The field is at Chingford. It was deserted at first - which was surprising, as it was a nice Saturday, and we weren't that early. [A bit after the crash, a guy wandered over and started chatting. He quite subtly checked that I was a member. All quite cool and friendly.]
