  • eSky Gyro setup help

    Hi guys.

I tried to fly my Belt CP today but I have a problem with the tail / gyro
The gyro is a esky heading hold gyro.

On the ground with the blades spinning the heli stays reasonably straight and I can control the tail with the rudder but it is VERY sensitive.

But as soon as I lift off the heli spins clockwise in a completely uncontrolable way and I have to land.

Is there any way to test the gyro when the heli is on the ground?

The tail servo is setup as shown in the esky manual.

I did try to reduce the travel ajust on the tail to make the tail less sensitive but the servo travel is the same even if I change the ajust to 50%

I dont know what im doing wrong, or if the gyro is working properly.. is there any way to test it?

sound like it needs reversing to me,, (the gyro sense)

best way to check direction is to grab the heli by the tail box and have the tailblades vertical now fold the top blade towards the canopy now move the tail to the right and the blade should also go to the right and if you move the tail to the left the blade will also move left, same with rudder input on your tx, hope this makes sense..

When I move the stick the blades move in the correct direction.
Clockwise (right rudder) = more pitch to push the tail to the left (when looking from behind)

Would the direction of the gain channel make any difference? I have this set to 63.5% (setting copied from another member on here) and the reverse set to the same as the rudder channel.

If I pick up the heli and move the tail around after the gyro has initialised the servo does not move at all.
This is why I was thinking the gyro might not work, or I have something setup wrong.

The tail servo only moves when I move the rudder stick.

oh sounds buggerd mate. but remember they can take a few seconds to arm, try leaving it for 5-10 seconds before touching or moving the heli,

Sometimes the servo movements can be quite subtle (especially if the gyro is in normal mode).

The easiest way to detect servo movement is to pick the heli up behind the main mast and rest a finger on the servo horn. Twist the heli smartly, and you'll feel the servo move (and the direction)--- or not, as the case may be.

Its definatley not moving. Not even a little bit.

I guess thats why its uncontrolable then

Annoying that I sent the other gyro to Liam, I could have swapped them out to test it.

Im tempted to drive down to midland heli and buy a new gyro.

So there is nothing that I could have setup incorrectly?

put the heli on a flat surface. make sure the rudder trim is in the middle on the tx, turn on tx and then plug the lipo in the heli without moving the heli. leave for 10 seconds and then try the rudder stick and check the servo is moving

                    cheers

is the gyro the same as this 1 and is it mounted the same way with the wire coming out the same side?
                      cheers

The servo moves when i move the rudder.

I just tried shaking the heli very violently with my finger on the tail servo and it might have moved a little bit.. but im still not sure. As its a feedback loop its not a good way to test it.
Im still not sure if the gyro is working.

Maybe I just have the servo mounted in the wrong position, hence the fast spins when it lifts off. I will try moving the servo a little closer to the tail to give me less pitch at midstick and try again.

                          DOH!!

                          Here comes the noob mistake

I have the gyro mounted flat in the heli with the lable facing upwards as in the pic above.

But my gyro is a different model to the gyro above and I found this thread on rcgroups
                          http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...ro#post7612972

The gyro is supposed to be mounted on its SIDE, not with the label facing upwards.

This probably explains why it wont work!!

I will remount the gyro and try again.

This might also explain why the servo isnt moving when I move the tail, as im moving it in the wrong axis.

I feel a bit dumb now, should have done more research

Ive remounted the gyro and it seems to be working fine now

Im not sure if I have time for another test flight now but I will try tomorrow if the weather is still calm.

the only good thing worth doing with an esky gyro or anything by esky is hit it with a very BIGGGG hammer and set it alight
