I'm completely new to RC helicopters, but I am instantly a huge fan. My main purpose for purchasing was for air video shots. I'm completely baffled by the sheer number of products on the market. I obviously need a very stable helicopter. I checked the reviews for the ESKY Lama v4 and it got good reviews. I would be enormously appreciative for your expertise in this matter. I believe a coaxial rc heli is what I need for stability and as a beginner. You may have a different opinion, which I would appreciate hearing.

I also have no idea what the advantage of the 2.5 Ghz would have on this copter. If someone could explain its advantages I would be most grateful. Lastly, I'm also looking for a USB transferable, SD card micro vidcam with good quality. Could anyone can recommend one and mention how they attach to the heli?

My hope is to get all of this for $175.00 - $200.00. I'm sure that's a big request looking at the current market, but that's truly all I can spend.
    Many Thanks for your assistance.

    Phil

P.S. How high can these units go? I am clueless re: the altitude they can reach, but for my purposes the higher the better.

You need to spend a while reading this forum. The helis can go as high as you want, getting them down is difficult as you won't be able to see them.
Your budget won't even cover the repair bills.

        Thanks............

Thank you both very much. I must admit, I was unaware that these helicopters were so fragile. The impression I got when reading about the ESKY Lama V4 was that it was extremely durable. I don't plan on doing stunts. Simply basic fly overs with a mini cam. Hmmm.

Another question I have is when you're flying and the copter goes out of range of the controls, does it just drop like a rock, does it recover if suddenly in range again?????????

Can someone also tell me the advantages of the extra cost re: 2.5 Ghz.

2.4g basicly means the tx and rx find eachother, and then there is no interferance, and it wont go twitchy... I think.

2.4Ghz means the transmitter works at a frequency of 2.4Ghz. This frequency is only line of sight so you don't get interference from people a long way away as you would on 35Mhz (uk) or 72Mhz (us). It doesn't stop two tx's getting the same frequency if they are out of ground range, but the models they are controlling is in air range of both of them. Each model will only respond to one tx though. The tx to rx link is called binding.

                Thanks again.

Thanks so much for your comments. So if I understand correctly, the only purpose for the additional 2.4 Ghz is to permit two copters to fly simultaneously without hitting one another. If I only plan to purchase one copter, the addition of the 2.4 Ghz is unessary. Am I correct or is there another advantage?

RC copters are a fascinating and complex "obsession". It would be great to get involved. It also appears that even if one purchases RTF that there is still a lot of maintenance and fine tuning involved. Reminds me of my attempts to investigate snowboarding. How expensive could a snowboard and accessories for the sport be. VERY EXPENSIVE .

                Phil

P.S. Does anyone have any opinions re: the ESKY Lama V4? It's considerably cheaper than other models.

                  No Phil
If you are fling on 27Mhz or 35Mhz and someone nearby switches on a transmitter on the same frequency, you will crash, the two signals interfere.
With 2.4Ghz you bind your transmitter to your receiver and the receiver with then only respond to commands from that transmitter.
                  No possibility of interference.

                      Phil,

The ESKY Lama (like all the co-ax helicopters of this size) will not handle wind so, to fly outside, you need a really calm day. They are also pretty limited in power available for lifting extra equipments (like a camera). IMHO co-ax's are good for learning the basics of helicopter flight and orientation but, ultimately, you will need a CP (collective pitch) helicopter to be able to (a) lift your gear and (b) be stable in wind. These are likely to be way outside your budget I'm afraid and take a lot more flying.

I have a FlycamOne installed in a T-Rex 500. That is about as basic as you can get with airborne video and the results are more amusing than material for the Oscars

My advice is to find someone local who has a model helicopter flight simulator and have a go with that before starting out on this wallet emptying hobby.

If you DO decide to go ahead, you will find loads of helpful guys on this forum and also on Helifreak in the USA.

                      Good luck

                        Welcome to the hobby.

You are very right to start with a coaxial such as the 'Blade MCX2' (mini), 'Blade CX2', E-Sky Lama V3 or E-Sky Lama V4.

The Blade MCX2 is a mini single cell version of the CX2.
The Blade CX2 is a two cell heli primarily for indoor use only.
The E-Sky Lama V3 has two cells but looks a little dated but at an attractive price.
The E-Sky Lama V4 has two cells a Chinese copy of the Blade at an attractive price.

I would recommend purchasing the 2.4Ghz version of the E-Sky Lama V4 as blades are very cheap, from Hong Kong via E-Bay, while the American made CX2 blades are quite expensive. Later you can bind (connect) to either a Spektrum DX6i or even DX7 when you move on to a larger heli. The 35Mhz version can be prone to interference.

                        Good luck!!

Can't thank you all enough for your assistance.

This is quite an extraordinary forum. All your advice is informative and invaluable. One last question........I promise . I'm searching for a micro vid cam that stores movie images on an SD card and can transfer these movies/stills directly to a computer via USB. I saw one recently, but sadly did not retain the information. Basically, I'm searching for a "Flip" vid cam. If you're familiar with this very popular, new video camera then you know what I'm talking about. If anyone has any suggestions I would be most appreciative.

                          Thanks,

Have you seen the Flycamone V2.

You can find many videos on YouTube from this cam.
