Just thought I'd add to this discussion. I learnt to hover with a normal gyro and 3001 servo. I then progressed to a gy240 and then onto a CSM 400 and from the 3001 to a 9001 then a Hitec 925 and eventually a couple of fast digitals. I use the CSM 560 and 400 HH gyros as well as a couple of 401's. One shop actually told me that HH would make me lazy whereas another couldn't believe I wasn't using it.

I only started using HH when I was practicing nose-in and didn't really find any difference between the two brands. Anyhow the point I'm trying to make is that HH is nice, but not necessary. This, of course will depend on your style of flying. I'm a scale flyer and as such don't use HH all that much, but if you're going into flying that demands a locked in tail then by all means utilise HH.

Id definately agree with the money argument, get the best you can afford. But what i occasionally do if i can, is to get the item secondhand but from a reliable source. For example, our chap here has got 150 for gyro and he could buy a new 401/9254 combo, or he could pick up a secondhand 601/9251 (i picked up mine for that price). The only danger with secondhand is to make sure you knows its history and that you see it working otherwise you're taking a calculated risk.
Ive never flown a 401, having gone from csm180 to 601 a while ago, but im assured they're very good. However i can definately say that having a good gyro makes you feel so much better when you try backward loops and backward rolls and high speed backwards circuits, inverted and normal way up, for the first time. I was always worried that if i did something wrong then the tail would kick out on me and i would loose it.

Also hey Mo, you got back into heli flying then??, good man

          James,

the reasoning behind it is to have a model the flies the same no matter what your doing. with HH if you put 1/4 stick in you will always get the same input unless your going REALLY fast.

you know that the tail will stay where you put it. So you always know where it is.
