  • Help needed with the GY401 Gyro setings :o(

I'm really stuck on setting up my GY401, it's been set before but it loses it's settings, but I've read about the memorization methods 1 & 2 and I don't know how or which one to do?

Right now when I power up the red LED flashes slowly but I have no rudder Gyro control, and I only dare to do low tail in at the moment because of this, but the tail is a bit lively which requires massive tail control while hovering

Right now on my DX6i the Gyro is set at SW-Gyro, Rate 0: 92.0% & Rate 1: 20%

but where it displays SW-Gyro the other choices are SW-INH, SW-F.Mode, (then Norm & Stunt are also displayed at the right of the screen next too the above rates on the left of the screen).

So when I read the GY401's manual where it describes how to set it up I'm completely lost as the discriptions they say you see on the TX's display are completely different from the DX6i's gyro display settings?

I admit I'm completely lost in this dept, the rudder adjust seems to be central when you move the Rudder stick left and right while on the ground, but with the LED flashing the manual says there is no rudder operation signal being input from the tranny, at this time, the rudder servo doesn't operate?

If anyone could kindly help me can you please write as simple as poss' as I know something simple is missing, but I'm somewhat intimidated with this area, and it's a total mystery.

I've seen the 450 fly when the gyro is set up and its as stable as a contra, where you can take your hands off the sticks and she just holds in the same position perfectly in control, right now it's a handful just holding her in tail in mode.

Many thanks for any help offered.

When you turn on the tx is the flip switch set to gyro mode. It should be & left for a few seconds to set itself. Then you can switch to normal.

I've been advised to leave any gain settings & it works for me....

Have you also set your gyro setting on your tx from inh to on? Took me a while & alot of head scratching.

Do you mean the switch on the front panel on the DX6i where the switch says Flap (top position) & Gryo (bottom position) that switch is always on the gyro setting?

Thanks mate but I'm still lost here.

I've a different tranny but that seems like the switch. I'm no expert, but did you set your gyro from inh to on within your tx settings. That had me fooled for a while.

The GY401 must be switched on in Heading Hold mode, so whichever gyro switch position you have that on, make sure that is selected before you power up the heli. Then leave it to set for a few seconds.
The light will go solid red on the gyro to show it has initialised correctly.
It needs to do this every time you power on.

When you add rudder input (move the rudder stick) the gyro LED will flash. Stop moving the stick and it will go solid again.

If you don't get any servo movement at all, check that you have the gyro plugged in correctly (plugs the right way into the receiver etc).

          Cheers,

The 401 must be switched on in heading hold mode so that the led goes solid red and only flashes when a rudder input is given. If its a slow constant flash its not been initialised in hh so try unplugging the heli, switch the gyro switch the other way them plug the heli back in and hopefully it will be a solid see to indicate hh is active. You can then switch it back off if you wish to fly in rate mode

No, thank you, thank you, you solved it, I done as you said and the red LED is solid and she holds perfectly, its a bit gusty and even in that she holds perfectly, it takes her up a bit when hit but shes rock solid.

Phew thanks mate you've just solved in a heart beat whats taken me 2 hours of reading and getting nowhere.

Well that feels good. No problem cambs flyer. Just last week I was also scratching my head over the 401. Now I've actually helped out on it, although the other chaps put it better than me. Now, on with understanding linkage rod lengths on the swashplate & those bloody curve thingies.

Thank you Mick, you've down me proud with your knowledge, pointing me in a direction I'd have never taken, top bloke.

Thank you too petern, I know sod all compared to most on this forum, place me side by side to the likes of Ron, Aidi, Busterboy just too name a few out of the elite knowledge based flyers and I'm still just a beginner.

I've just done 3 batt packs thru the 450, having great fun hard banking, riding the wind, hell have I missed this, due to ill health I've been grounded for 12 weeks, so you can imagine my passion to get out was burying the needle.

Now I can't wait to get my 500 up where she belongs, this hobby is one continuous fast ride, and the beauty of it is you learn something new all the time, like I've just had, now I'm using the GY401 as nature intended it's frigging awesome, even when the wind takes her she still points true.

Bloody fantastic, I'm about to run my forth batt, then call it a day or I'll be back to square one again.

Again I thank you all kindly.

Aidi thank you, it arrived perfectly this morning bro'.

Clare treat me to your one, as now I have two not on anything, one will go on my T500, and the other will go on my home build 450 which I'm putting together with odds and ends I'm collecting, plus with all the parts I've upgraded to alloy from my present 450.

So before the years out I'll have 2 450's, which I'll gradually upgrade to my present 450's standard.

Flying these machines is a gadget junkies dream pass time, Plank flying....Narr doesn't even come close to this.

One thing that threw me when I was using a 401 was that I had inadvertantly added a small amount of rudder trim (probably accidentally).
This had the effect of making the gyro light blink all the time and wouldn't go solid.
Of course it was indicating that it was receiving a rudder input (which it was through the trim).
After realising my mistake I dialled out the trim and the light stayed on solid.
Just thought I would mention this in case anyone else is having similar issues.
                              Adrian.
