  • Dug up from the Cellar

    Hi Gang I'm new here!

I used to fly RC Helis about 15 or so years ago (maybe a bit more).

I recently got a PicooZ and what a load of FUN, (for a 60 year old), so I've been into my cellar and there I dug out my old shuttle ZX, I've had to change swiches and battery in the TX (futuba FP-T5NH) but it works! the engine started up quite easily and the gyro and all the radio gear on the Shuttle is working fine (new battery here too). I never was anything of an acro pilot, just enjoyed flying the heli about. Very GINGERLY I've got it back in the air and flown it a little (tail in only). I got a sim (cheap one RC Heli Master) but I don't go too much on that, however I've seen on the internet that the REFLEX XTR is good, what do you all think and which is the best way for me to improve my flying (safer), also have Helis changed much since the days when my Shuttle zx was considered a fairly good ship?

    Regards,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Things have certainly changed a bit since way back then lol.

The main things that have changed is the radio gear and electronics.

Best bet would be to upgrade your gyro to a new one that is heading hold, as they are a lot nicer than the old peizo ones that were about in the early/mid 90's etc (used to have an old mechanical gyro in a heli I had mid 90s lol)

Also, as regards simulator, everyone rates Phoenix as the best and also its a really good price compared to the rest, ive not got it myself yet, but it is on my to get list

Might also be wise to upgrade your servos as theyre digital now, so are a LOT better when it comes to accuracy etc.

      Hi Mike and welcome.

The Shuttle although old should serve you well.

Spares are readily available but can be pricey and modern machines win hands down on the cost of spares front.

I would simply enjoy it. Some new electronics as stated would make a big difference.

      Cheers

        which way?

Will the new Gyros and digital servos work with my existing radio gear?

Why is Phoenix better than Reflex ot vise versa

What is the difference in the new Shuttle plus from the old one like mine?

There seems to be loads of electric models about, appart fron the obvious (nitro etc) what are their differences?

Thanks for your comments so far, I hope you don't get bored with my questions!

        Regards,

        Mike.

            Hi Mike

The new Shuttle plus has an improved swash plate and a much improved tail pitch control from the Sceadu helicopter.

Also I believe your ZX is belt start? If so, the Shuttle Plus has a top start hex drive as used on the Shuttle ZXX.

Not familiar with your electronics so cannot comment. Someone will be along shortly I'm sure.

            Cheers

                  Hi mike and welcome bud'.

Its great your getting back into the game, and your Shuttle has risen form the dust to fly once again.

Again buy Phoenix mate, all the expensive sims are superb, only Phoenix is cheaper and offers everything the more expensive ones do.

Plus the updates and customer help is faultless

Interesting point Mike, but its like a double edged sword, we give good feedback and PR to our LHS's and the guy's at Phoenix, and in return we receive excellent service, IE we help our store of choice stay in business buy spreading the good word, and with Phoenix you buy the software, and all the updates are free there after, where most software companies offer 12 months free updates when you buy the program with a yearly fee there after.

So in a way we do get our moneys worth, and a good customer - retailer friendship makes the whole show a more enjoyable experience all round.
