    Hi Davey,
As you may have guessed, I haven't got a lot of knowledge or experience on RC heli's yet. If I were to buy a Spectrum 6 or 7, can you tie together two channels so that the throttle and collective pitch increase at the same time while operating L/H stick?. I don't understand how you operate 5 servo's with only 4 stick positions. This probably seems a really stupid question, but if you could enlighten me I would be eternally grateful.

Not a daft question at all, it's all part of the programming on the Tx. Going back not so long ago you would have had a Y lead doing what you've asked but the Tx will take care of that for you.

The throttle and collective are mixed and controlled with the left stick (mode 2) these in turn each have a 5 point program curve that you can alter to suit your needs. Some transmitters have more points for finer adjustment but is 5 is plenty for most people.
You actually need 6 channels to control most modern helicopters as the tail gyro also needs a channel to control the gain and it's flight mode, heading lock or rate mode. Some older gyros have an adjustable control on them instead of this channel control but they are best avoided to be honest as it's likely not to be a very easy to setup gyro if it doesn't have a remote gain facility.

going back to dave's y lead the other option used was to run one servo with two rods off it, one to the pitch the other to the throttle
          today things are much easier
as said the mixing is done in the transmitter

with the gyro you have you will need the 6th channel
i've had a look around and it seams to be one of the many futaba gy401 copies
set up and use will be the same

Thanks alot. I have decided to go for the DX7 rather than the DX6 to give room for further developments. I am very grateful for your comments and advice.
              Thanks again.

I dont often write on forums but you put me in mind of when I first started, Its a steep learning curve and can be expensive buying incompatible parts. IMHO sell both the heli and the tx separate then consider buying a dx6i tx minimum and a 450 size electric heli, like a Blade 300x,450 or trex 250,450. You will find it easier to find parts and help with these brands, join a club, people at these clubs know so much and when your not sure of your set up they will usually help. I used to get people from the club I use to fly my heli so I could tell if it was the heli or my lack of skills. Good luck with what ever you do.

Thanks for the info'. You're right there is a lot to learn when you first start but I am sure I will get there with help and advice from others. I still need to find a helli' club within reasonable distance, most clubs seem to be for planes. I appreciate your comments.
                  Thanks again.

I would just like to say good luck and take your time. Many of us, me included learnt using a 30 sized nitro heli rather than a micro electic and the extra size and stability can really help the learing procesd

Thanks Mark. Its reassuring for someone to say a nitro 30 size is a good way forward.
