  • Nearly shate myself!!!!!

Christ, 10 minutes ago I must have shit myself at least three times in one setting.

Been to Inwoods today after speaking to Ian, who'd kindly attached Deans plugs to my ESC and new Batt, were going back on Thursday so the aerial can be replaced plus to check over the settings on the servos etc.

So in my wisdom I though a (few mins ago) lets see the rotas in action, so i weighed down the skids to avoid any mishaps turned the tranny to the 450 model (so I thought) but didn't then connected the batt.

Ohh dear what a mistake, the bloody thing came to life and must have reached full throttle with me laying besides it thinking what the hell do I do now?????

I managed to disconnect the bat terminals after about 10 seconds of shear terror, then she wound down to a stop.

The motor had a slight burning smell afterwards and was quite hot, is this normal, I hope I haven't done any damage to the motor, its wasn't going for more than ten seconds before I stopped her.

So in light of this...."well my pratish behavior" I'm leaving well alone until Thursday, I was thinking what might have happened had I tried this outdoors, as I wouldn't have had the skids weighed down and lets be honest she'd have gone up and never be seen again......*#*#*#*#

I'm just a little worried about that burning smell from the motor have I fried something?

jesus wayne !!! that is one side of electrics i hate. there is no way on gods earth i would want to plug in a trex 600e!!! hopefully no harm done.

you could always plug in again to see if it works of course.

i would have thought the failsafe should have worked if the wrong model was selected, so get that checked.

Thanks guy's, I deserve all the **** taking I receive here.

But it was crap your pants scary.

Now if I remember I changed the TX setting to model 2 which is the 450 channel, but, and its a big BUT I never entered it, when I picked up the TX it was still in the menu mode for different models, talk about a jack ass mistake, I feel a right twat that I done something so bloody stupid.

I'm trying to reason that burning smell from the motor, surely flying under 3D conditions it would be under much more extreme pressure and for longer too, I guess the worst case scenario is I'll have to buy a new motor, but at this stage I'm hoping nothing serious has happened to it???

Ron, theres no way on God's Earth I'm powering up that bugger until Thursday, I had a very humbling experience tonight I'll never repeat again.

The ESC wont start unless it sees closed throttle, then an open throttle.
So I'm not sure how it started.
dunno what tex it is (DX6 or 7?). If a DX be sure to rebind with the throttle closed - then it sets the throttle for the failsafe.
If its a futaba the throttle needs to be reversed.
If the motor is new then it may well have a hot smell to it on the first run.
          Good luck with that!

            Thank you MB.

TBH mate I don't know what happened it was all a blur, the ESC was making all the beep sounds then all of a sudden off she went, I have the DX6 but I fear it wasn't, in fact I know it wasn't set on the right model, or any model come to that.

I don't think the motor's new, but I'm a bit concerned about the smell, it did smell like the kind of burning in smell you find with some items, but it was only powered up for a few seconds, 10 at the most, so I don't really know.

My 11.1v 2100mah battery is the right one for the 450 isnt' it? I'm sure it is?

Again many thanks JB & Rob , my misses keeps saying it's us boys and our toys, and no matter how old we get were always get ourselves in the odd fix here and there.

Say's her when occasionally I have to beg to practice on Phoenix when she gets on it, she likes the Planks though and says the heli's are to hard to fly.

This has been a wake up call, as I could have been outside when this happened and by now had the old bill on my door step arresting me for half killing some poor sod on its way down.

Thanks everyone for your time and advise, much appreciated.

Oh yea, I might as well own up, just to add the icing on my cherry cake of horrors today when we left Inwoods guess who left his DX6 on the Car roof?

Thanks to a merciful God the sliver handle got securely wedged in the rubber grip of the roof rack grip so no damage was done.

But imagine my surprise when we stopped at Huntington's Tesco store and saw that sitting there all proud and in one piece, even the broken ariel hinge stayed in place, and that comes apart right now if you fart loud enough, BTW they have a replacement which will be fixed on Thursday hopefully.

I've been told to hang my head in shame when I enter the store next Thursday.....A couple of hundred years ago some nutter would be telling me this is a message from the God's to give up now and stay alive.

                      Howdie Folks,

I have read a few posts with regards to plugging batterys in and the blades going to full tilt and scaring the wits out of the owner.. I am sure it has put some real fear into newbies who are not aware of the inherant dangers.

It got me thinking.. You tend to use both hands when plugging a battery in.. so if it does go off on one, then your at the mercy of the blades and no hands available to hit the Tx if the throttle is up too high.

Is is possible to put some sort of switch between the heli connection and the battery? At least this way you can safely plug the battery in, get yourself sorted and then when fully prepared switch on. If it does go ape, then you at least have a fighting chance of dropping the throttle on the tx.

I am sure this has been thought of before, and there are many reasons why it is not adopted... It would be interesting to hear either way.

I have a Blade 400 which i have yet to fly... so keen to find out as much as i can before getting it in the air.

                      Rgds

                        Wayne Wayne Wayne...........

                        Why couldn`t you wait?

Sorry I couldn`t have spent more time with you today....but the shop was mega busy, as you saw.

I know exactly what you did(never done it myself ...obviously)

The DX6 you have is based on the JR 662

                        Had one of those.

When you were in the settings, you went one marked MOD, thinking it meant MODEL, changed it....
                        MODEL is actually MDL.
                        MOD is MODE.
Bet you changed the stick mode to mode 1.

Did you wiggle the right stick.
That would set the ESC if you pulled it back.
When you release the stick it springs to centre, giving you half throttle.
I had A PLANK DO THAT AND SHOOT ACCROSS THE KITCHEN UNITS

                        Live and learn

Leave it till Thursday and we will go through it.

maybe.... you turned off the rx whilst the batt was still connected to the ESC?

however it happened - it is scary! glad you are ok

The main thing is your ok. the model if it was damaged at all can be repaired.

one of the suggestions above must be the reason, if there is no signal to the esc it shouldnt start the motor and if you have more than low throttle when plugging in again the esc shouldn't set because of problems like this.
                            All the best

Hi Aidi, yes there is a safety switch on the TX which is a throttle kill to avoid such accidents as what happened yesterday, and did I have it in the right position........

Luckily the only good thing I did do was weigh the skids to the ground, this gave me precious seconds to deal with the battery connections to kill the motor, I think if any lesson was taught here (for me) is to double check everything you do while preparing the heli for flight.

I was very lucky, stupid but lucky, I'm just pleased this happened under a semi controlled situation IE with weights on the skids, but a valuable lesson has been taught here for me, don't be complacent while doing the start up procedure, I was excited to see it all working and in the process I nearly lost her.

Nick I know mate.....Since I've had the 450 I've always said I wont rush anything, yesterday I learnt why, but thank you for what you done yesterday, and under the pressure with you doing about five things at once, I felt a bit guilty when I realised how in demand you were while sorting out my connections and all.

Again I'll wear the Pratt hat on Thursday, but thanks a million for all your advise and help.

I'll be honest I'm not sure how the seconds to disaster happened, only that I screwed up big time, had this been a Trex 500/600 it would have been a full blown disaster, having seen Robs power up you'd never get a second chance with a heli of that size.

PJ & Tony thanks chaps, luckly only my pride got dented, total terror is a wonderful learning curve how not to do it ever again!
