  • Fuel for predator

Hi I have just purchased a predator with a zenoah 23 cc in it what is the best
    petrol for it ?
    unLeaded or super unleaded ??

Go for normal, the super contains detergents that don't to model engines any favours, so I'm told anyhoo...

normal unleaded and amsoil 100:1 (at 80 to 90:1 mix)
              now called saber professional 100:1
its what the scale boys use
or a good quality 2 stroke oil (don't use the above mix ratio)
              don't use cheap oil

amsoil can be got from performance oils

Stihl 2 stroke oil is fine. If it's good enough for their chainsaws it will be good enough for your engine.

If the predator has been running on it use it.

It also means don't touch the needle settings there not like nitro machines in any way inc the throttle curve just don't do the 0,25,50,75,100

Gasser's are diffrent beasts 0,15,44,60,100 or something if I recall for throttle curve.

I was just reading some long threads last night on, I think either RR or Helifreaks and they got into a detailed discussion about octane and spark advances etc.

Apparently, the bottom line is that the Zenoah engines and similar small 2 strokes that are not tweaked for a zillian RPM run best on a lower octane petrol. I had thought about avgas but apparently that's a no no.

This looks like a possible alternative to regular petrol if you want to avoid the smell and some of the additives; Aspen 2T alkylate petrol - Aspen alkylate petrol - Environmental fuels - Motor racing fuel & racing oil from Anglo American Oils UK: Suppliers of high performance motor sports fuels - oils & Lubricants.

Some specialist chainsaw dealers are selling it.

When I rode motocross bikes way back when, the best was always a high octane 'premium' petrol because those engines used tuned pipes and had spark advances setup for slower burning fuels.

The engines in gasser helis are made to run on pretty much 'garden variety' petrol and not racing fuel or high octane etc.

People always say to keep running the same fuel / oil that it has been run on but really the engine doesn't 'know' what it was running on, only the richness or lean-ness, so if you change the oil mix drastically it might take some carb adjusting to compensate.

The oil leaves a residue and it’s this that doesn’t mix very well when changed and can clog the ring gap.

It depends on what was in there before vs the new mixture, ie: synthetic vs caster-based etc. There are oils that
will mix well with either (like Silkolene that some of the microlites use).

I am keen to try the Aspen Alkylite 2T but will see what implications it may have vs what was in there before.

I used to ride motocross bikes years ago and those guys would switch oil mixes and types all the time.

But if you have a good oil and mix ratio that works well and you're happy with it there's probably no need to change.

I have been thinking along the same lines but it’s double the price of pump gas and defeats the object of running a gasser I think.
