  • Vbar Wiring - Futaba R617FS Patch Cables to Futaba R6303SB S-Bus Modification

Well following my S-Bus thread Here I have decided to do a little update for those reading up on the subject.

Heres the original setup, with vbar and R617FS with patch cables plus wiring for the governors phase sensor & ESC connections and voltage monitors - so in other words very few ports for power supply (HV Setup)

Size comparison between the two RX's - both are full range & HV capable.

New RX fitted in place and just one heavy duty patch cable connecting the S-Bus to the Vbar. I then plugged the Vbar into the PC and adjusted the settings to S-Bus and checked the other settings before plugging any servos in etc.

I then remade my power supply, I decided to go for three power points - two direct into the Vbar (one each end of the servo plugs) and one direct power supply to the RX (not critical as the RX can feed off the Vbar but I like to have a little more safe guard). New power lead soldered up (Hell of a lot neater than the MK1 version LOL)

This brought about another small problem in that two of my servo leads were just that little bit too short to reach the Vbar, so I fitted some heavy duty extension leads like so:

Plug>glued into extension lead>12mm 3:1 heatshrink>shrunk down to a nice secure fit (this plug isn't coming apart under any normal circumstances lol)

Finished item - Granted from the photo it doesn't look much different but there's a lot less wiring in there and less connections, I feel much more confident about this setup over the previous.

Also a little mention for Alastair who has been lending a helping hand behind the scenes who mentioned about this castle quick link, it allows you to tidy all the wires away for the ESC but still allows quick and easy access for downloading data logs - hes also helped out with some vbar setup too so a big thanks to him!

Yeah the governor/phase sensor/castle esc setup was a little tricky to say the least - Having updated the ESC to version 4.02 for external governor it also means you need to use a digital phase sensor (hobby wing) not the analogue Hyperion one! That only works with the older firmware or some other ESCs but anyway thanks for your help on that and everything else too! Much Appreciated!

I'm working on it mate - Trouble is equipment & money, I need a better charger, my current charger takes 2 hours to recharge a 6S 5000mah lipo off a 12V supply - I have tried to buy more LiPos but hobby king are out of stock and I don't want to pay more than I have to. I'm trying get a decent charger in the next week or two then I will at least be able to get a few flights in up at the field with you.. Trust me once I'm sorted I'll be part of the furniture up there lol

Looking good buddy! Keen to know about your VBar gov setup. I haven't really looked at it as its just easier to use the Castle setup at the moment.

            Is it easy to do?

LOL well the first time I did it I think i hit every pothole there was because the manuals on how to set it up are completely useless...

However now i've been through it all it could be easily done again, we just need a clear set of instructions sorting out which AlastairC has done a thread on here about it, only points to add I think is:

Update the firmware in your ESC to version 4.02 - set it to external governor (i can send the other settings on request)
You need a digitial phase sensor (FastLad's do a hobbywing one which works well)
Theres a few other ins & outs but could do with writing a thread really...

The main advantage of using the Vbars governor is it has the advantage of pre-empting the coming load on the motor - so can compensate for it before any changes in headspeed actually happen. whereas the ESC only sees the rotor head speed as it happens, so is a little slower in compensating for loads etc.

Will have a go at it Dani_r - its just trying to remember it all lol...

Alastair, what you reckon, If i do a step by step guide and cross link it with yours then maybe we'll have everything covered? I'd only be able to do the full size vbar since thats what I'm working with - never had a mini so your thread comes in handy on that?

Great! Please do. Copy what you need from my post. I just don't have the time at the moment. I can help you with the mini vbar bit.

Do i eed to link the Vbar to the PC for first use?

i did not buy the vbar new.I Bought used from a guy!

Hi! I have a Futaba R6303SB S-Bus also. Do you need to set up the receiver to digital servos mode, or it will recognize the servos automaticaly?

The vbar whas also configurated to the heli. So i will need to setup just put the swash mode in the radio in the normal no?

                            Thank you!

Vbar by default is configured digitally to servos, you could change them as well to analog. Sorry, I misread your question. Sbus receivers automatically recognizes the servos being analog or digital. There are some though that you have to set it by either high speed or normal one. Normal is compatible to analog servos and digital while high speed is only compatible to digital servos and drives the servos faster while on analog, the servo will buzz like crazy.
