  • Tail link rod adjustment question

My tail stop is kinda soft on the left side (nose going right). (slight bounce when I stop but nice and firm on the opposite)
Now, some people have said I'll need to turn the link rod a turn or 2 to adjust it mechanically... BUT WHICH WAY? Do I do this to give more space for the tail left turn (nose right) or do I leave more space for the opposite (nose left)?

Or should I forget this and go into the expert mode and fiddle with the precomps?
my tail gain is at 70 on vbar menu.

At the moment, my link rod is exactly what Vbar states on its menu - with the tail pitch arm positioned square giving me 2-3degrees of pitch

      Tail link rod adjustment question

I found on my 550 that the stops and piro rates were not even. Turned on the optimiser for the tail and did an few piros in each direction. Landed turned it off and all was good.

      Cheers,

Hmm, I might need to go to the field to properly get Optimizer going first then before I fiddled with any mechanical or advance options do you think?
I just hovered in the front house yesterday and tweaked a few settings (I know it's probably not enough of a test)

If you've set it up as per the manual 2-3 degrees of offset i would leave the mechanical setup as is... particulary if one way works ok.

Its a case of tweaking with the settings. I have some video links on the pc i will forward them later. On mobile atm

My 700e and 550 both need some right rudder to compensate for torque, try some climb outs to see what it's doing.

As above I would not play with the mechanics. If you have the couple of degrees and linkages are smooth. Get to the field and try the optimiser first

Ok - I shall take it to the field and will try. Yes my mechanical setup is as per the manual. square linkages and 2-3degrees of pitch.
First time I took it to the field (only just got the heli a couple of weeks back and only just took it up on its first flight last week),
                current settings as of yesterday:

These are the videos I mentioned:

                  VBar 101 - Episode 14 - Part 1 (Tail rotor std) - YouTube

                  VBar 101 - Episode 14 - Part 2 - Tail rotor advanced - YouTube

Also I notice your optimiser is reading 45/99 it says in the vbar manual that a number over 80 points suggests too much or too little mechanical compensation. HOWEVER i have found this isn't always the case as improving the other settings also helps to sort this out.

Muscleflex, I have just found that mr mel has done a more updated version which pretty much covers what I ended up doing with the exception to I gain, watch this:

Glad I stumbled across this thread, I've been having a nightmare with my E5 tail too. I was on the cusp of sorting it, when the power cutout (second time, numbnut here had set the ESC to a soft cutout at 3.7v/cell , although I wouldn't call full power to none a soft anything!!!) and broke the tail fin.
Of course it couldn't just snap the fin, OH NO, it had to bend into the tail blades and bugger them too lmao!!
Anyway, followed most of the procedures n stuff on here and now I'm just off to the garden to see if my tail has been sorted.
                        Thanks

                          ^^ how was it?
Mine is better now but still not 100% happy with it. I think I need to find the right headspeed for it but cant test as I have the dreaded tail hum so must order better tail blades but can't till next week payday.

Im not sure yet!! I took it out, only to find main tail drive gear had lost 4 teeth, following a "soft cutout" at 10 feet. Well, I say soft, full power to nowt in a millisecond??? Just waiting for the gear to arrive from FL and I'll report back.

I found if your doing any sort of stunts (even harsh pitch pumps) then the headspeed needs to medium to high for the tail to have enough authority - and this is with slightly larger tail blades too.

If your HS is low it won't hold so good.. especially on the newer aligns they changed the gearing ratios to allow for higher (mental imo) HS's
