  • BD 3SX going in the bin.

Well having spent the whole day trying to set up a Bavarian Demon 3SX without success, I've decided to move to Rendlesham Forest and spend the rest of my life whittling spoons. Just like the advert.

Meanwhile the stupid BD controller can go in the bin.

Only ever set one up, that was for a friend but it was all pretty straightforward. Whats the problem exactly?

I've just spent the day setting up a HC3SX, it was very different the others which I have set up, but it did all click in the end.

          Granpappy,
What exactly is the issue? I've just completed setting up my fourth one of these, hopefully myself and others can help you.

            Haha I feel your pain.

Mine is still not set up properly and I really have lost interest in it as a fbl controller.

Cost at me a fortune and the support is simply dreadful.

If Angelos can make the Spartan so simple then why can't others be the same?

Sorry for the rant. I've finally got it figured. I actually had to change the battery in my transmitter whilst going through all this palava.

Anyway the setup starts by telling you to set your transmitter to H-1 swashplate (even though it's HR-3). Did this, but I could not get correct swashplate movement during setup. In the end I went through nearly all the swashplate setups with different combinations of servo wiring to ch1 - ch3 on the controller and eventually Tri(120) with the correct servo to channel wiring worked. The wiring diagram doesn't show Tri(120, only H-3 120. I didn't know it was the same. This is still different to HR-3 so I'm still sceptical. What made it more difficult was that I didn't know which servo's needed to be reversed either until I happened upon the right swashplate setting. What a carry on. Thanks for the offers of help.

Just let me know if you need help, I run BD's on everything and yes they can be a bit of a pain on some helis, but they're rock solid when working!

You cant have TX-adjustable tail gyro gain, TX-adjustable head gyro gain and the rescue function all at the same time. Tab "7. Horizon", "assignment 'head gyro channel'" has two options; "rigid gain" which allows you to tune the head gyro from the TX, and "horizon" which enables the horizontal/rescue mode. Tab 8 allows you to have TX adjustable tail or head gain.

Personally, I fly my new helis a couple of times making adjustments with the laptop and then never need to make any adjustments until I change something (dampers, blades etc).

There are some guides on helifreak which show you how to set-up this real-time tuning if you want to use it.

As Ian R says. Set tail & gyro gain with a couple of flights before activating the rescue function in the software. On helifreak in the Bavarian demon section there is a setup guide for the DX8 if indeed that is the Tx you are using. (PAge 3, post #43 in the last sticky in the BD section). This helps with setting the Tx up as well as the BD3SX. I came out of helis 15 years ago before FBL's existed and the BD3SX was my first FBL unit and I managed it.

Fly and increase tain gain until wag and reduce by 5%. Fly head gain until ossilation and reduce by 5%. Note the Tx values and input these values into the BD software. Once you have programmed gain values into the BD3SX then you can setup the horizon and rescue functions.

Okay thanks for the help. I'm using a Futaba 14SG so I will have to figure the setup on that without the help of a video.

                      Cheers.

here he is using an 8FG should be similar to the 14SG - HERE are the set-up video's!!!!!!!!! - HeliFreak

on my 18MZ I set the tail to one rotary knob and the head gain to the other - then do the tess flights before assigning the sping loaded switch to perform the rescue - if I need to go back, same procedure ... not that difficult really

I decided to do the test flights after work today as the weather was reasonable. I couldn't put it off forever. So off to the heath I went with thoughts of doom and despair and expecting all sorts of nasties like rolling over on lifting or spinning on the spot.

And...............it was a real pleasure to fly. The swash didn't move on run up and it lifted and just sat there with no shimmy, shake, wag or nod and the tail was rock solid and didn't run away with yaw control. I didn't have to change a thing.

I'm actually worried about changing it from rigid mode to horizon mode and setting up rescue. I just don't want to fiddle with any settings that could possibly upset the way it flies now. But I guess I'm going to have to otherwise I might just as well have just got a 3S.

                              Happy days.
