I dont think you can mess up the way it flies from there. Activating horizon just allows the BD3SX to see extra values from the switch you assign to the head gain channel.. On my TX (DX8) I have the SL and rescue on a 3 position switch where position 1 is self level (in case I get a fly in my eye or itchy barse) and this value you can choose depending on how hard you want self level to work. I think the stock value is quite hard (harder than a coaxial heli - self level) and moving away from this value you can make it as soft as a flybarred heli. From memory the self level values are positive. (pages 9-12 in the BD3sx manual on the BD website)
Rescue on the other hand is a negative value and I think needs to be -100% or more negative. This is in position 2 of the switch. Though you dont really want to have the to switch back through 2 positions on a switch to get back to normal flying mode when you have just shat yourself in the requirement of rescue. So I bound a momentary switch/button (bind button or a sprung switch) to the same channel again with rescue values.
You change how rescue behaves in the software and not by changing TX values. Rescue recogonised an on or off value from the TX. In the BD software you can select upright self level from any oreintation or nearest level oreintation which could be inverted. This is handy when starting to learn inverted as when you find things are going pearshaped a quick tap of the rescue momentary switch and you are back to level but inverted. So carry on inverted. Otherwise you'd need to flip the heli over again from upright. You can also change how violently it reaches for the sky and the stock level is pretty quick and if you are fumbling to deselect from a non sprung switch or button the heli can get high quickly.
You can check on the ground before you spool up if all works. Orange solid is the flight mode you were in today - never spool up if the light isnt orange or take off. (rigid mode). Position 0 on switch Start at 20%
position 1 should make the light go solid green - self level mode
position 2 (and a momentary switch) should make it flash green - self level with collective pitch rescue.
If you get that on the bench it'll work.
Do practice using rescue - get used to at least letting go of cyclic (not easy when up until owning a rescue FBL pilots will fight to save it until it goes in) You can mix out cyclic inputs when rescue is activated. I havent as after being out of helis for 10 years FBL was new to me and I chose one with rescue and learnt to fly again with rescue. You need to use rescue alot at first to train yourself that when you need it you dont do what you have done forever and hit throttle hold. It can give unexpected results with cyclic inputs. So either mix them out or learn to let go of the inputs. This is hard. Surprises such as activating rescue when the collective was full negative was a shock when letting go of the rescue as it goes straight back to where you collective is on the TX. Using it lots will help you know what to expect when it is activated and when it is deactivated. The rescue needs to be learned how to fly with it. If you wait until you really need it to activate it I think this is where some people come unstuck and call rescue rubbish.
Well done on setting it up. Good luck with fathoming rescue - switch assignment on that 14SG!
