I would say that "ordinary" gyros only know about orientation changes, but not about the absolute position in relation to the ground. In other words, 3gx does not know at any point in time which direction earth is. Not an expert here, just thinking out loud.

So how does it know which way is up? Does it learn this when you take off or something. It would seem to me (albiet with my very limited knowledge of how these FBL units work) that any 3 axis system could essentially learn a particular series of sensor readings, either as a preset threshold of some seconds after you takeoff or by telling it somehow. Then it would just need something to tell it the altitude above the liftoff point and anytime you push the panic button it would return to those remembered settings and if it's too low then plus X amount of altitude.

And I'm guessing the whole point of initialisation is to know which way up the heli is (any freak want to try an inverted take-off with one of those 450 invert training kits?)
After that most systems I;d xpect to simply work like a HH gyro as i do what the tx says and hold until told different.
If there are accelerometers in there as well then it'd be theoretically possible to keep a calculation going offset from the take-off point..which would be way cool rather than gps
Setup will be the point where you tell the system where a bit of pitch is for the safety climb whatever way up it is.

I have had 3 of these units for a couple of years now - all the old heli command ones, which are identical bar the branding. They are quite simply one of the best aids to learning this hobby out there. I have not had one crash since installing them on my fleet where as before I use to have a bad crash every couple of months or so. I have the courage now to try moves I would not have dared to do on a normal gyro. Bottom line is that my flying has come on quicker and safer since I started using these.
Set up is a doddle - sicknote on helifreak has done some set up videos which show how easy it is.
Expensive up front but will pay for its self many times over the longer you have it - try saying that with a normal gyro.
I remember seeing posts from Jamin when he first got one on helifreak and he is already a good authority on them. AND best of all.....................

As you can tell - I love them.

I have no idea lol but I would guess its in the setup as you are telling the unit like you do any other which way its mounted so when it turns on it knows which is upright and inverted. I could easily test this by powering on the heli upside down and flicking the switch on the ground and see what the swash does as when I first set it up I test it by flicking the rescue switch and watching the swash jump up. Then I could test it in the air up high incase it darts down lol as it returns to your stick positions when you let go.

Actually thats 1 good bit of advice, now when I activate the bail out I always move pitch to match the climb out otherwise if im at neg and its climbing out upright, if I keep the pitch at neg when I let go off the switch it will bomb downwards. You tend to let go off cyclic in a panic which is a good thing but you can override this and you can set how sensitive the override is when on a bailout so it can then respond to cyclic whilst bailing out if that makes sense lol.

It has saved me from many a crash but then would I have been trying the moves, no I would not but with this you can and with no fear at all. I have no fear with it when trying anything now, its great lol.

All I did was read a few threads and watch the vids. Now I can set one up without them as once you have done it once or twice you know what your doing. Im not sure what I would have done when setting the program mixes for the bailout as I never even read the manual. does it even come with a manual lol. I got it as a .pdf but have not needed it as the vids were clear and precise so no issues what so ever. I think I asked a few questions during to clarify something for me but other than that its a doodle now.

One thing sooren, I did have issues the mounting postion on my 770. I had it on the extra CF tray and in flight it was not right, was like it was getting vibes. I did not know that, that was the issue but I had read that some users with the Goblin's had removed this and mounted it directly on the alloy plate and once I done this it was solid. I had no issues with the Vbar full size sensor on there I do have to add but that is smaller and did fit better on there whereas the BD unit over hanged a little around its sides. Maybe it was this that caused the issue?
