  • GPro with FRSky SBUS

    Hi Gpro people!

I got a GPro recently to put on a Trex 450 with an FRSky X4R receiver - the one with SBUS. The receiver and radio have both been updated to the recent EU update from FRSky. The GPro was very slow to initialise but once initialised it did not behave normally... the gyro responses of the cyclic and tail servos were smooth and completely normal but any input from the sticks/receiver was very jerky. It was as if the swash moved to the correct place but was only updated every .5sec or so. No problems if I connected up a VBar clone to the receiver instead... it worked fine. I also tried using SBUS off a X6R and had the same problem.

The GPro worked fine with a Spektrum satellite so I assumed it must be something to do with the X4R and the way it was communicating with the GPro. Long story short, I got rid of the EU firmware update from the radio and the receivers, replacing them with the worldwide version. "Hey presto" it works fine!

Anyone else tried using GPro with FRSky SBUS? Anyone tried with the EU update firmware? Anyone seen anything similar or got any other thoughts? Seems to me the EU FRSky firmware doesn't like talking to GPro!

Ive got the same problem but with microbeastx, works fine with vbar and brain.the beastx does work in normal rx mode with a xr8,but most my helis use a xr4 as its the size of a satellite
im wondering about using a sbus inverter to see if that works

Subscribed for reference if I am ever asked, as know nothing about this rc gear.

Interesting that certain protocols it seems do not work well. Can you assign a different Sbus protocol on the Tx? For example JR offer Mode A or Mode B with their Xbus system and the Vbar needs to receive Mode B.

There is an EU firmware for this on FrSky website, seems they've recognised there is an issue.

That fix is available for the world wide firmware too, s so I don't think it's an eu only issue.

I run the worldwide firmware as I've had my taranis a while now, and flashed the sbus fixed firmware to my latest x4r, which works fine with vbar on my x5.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

The sbus bug fix in both firmware versions was a fix for the extended travel limits bug that would cause a issue in sbus if using over 125% travel.
I believe we are experiencing a separate issue with sbus on the eu firmware.one good about the eu firmware is it sends the channels in packets of 3 now so latency on the cyclic servos is better if you use channel 1.2.3 for them of cause.
although i like the telemetry side of the tarannis ,im having a hard time adjusting to the slightly slower response and mushy feel of the collective ,its seems better since the update but i think its the lack of throttle end stops that physically limit the collective travel on alot of radios thats taking time to adjust to.
considering going to my old radio( hitec 9x) for helis now they finally have sbus rxs

That is the firmware that doesn't seem to work with GPro. The worldwide update with the SBUS update is the one that does work as far as I can see.

These are the firmware versions that work for me...

Austenrover are you using the EU or non-EU software?

Im using the eu firmware ,may have go though the process of reflashing 7 helis and 4 planes back to non eu software.then flashing any new rxs to non eu as and when purchased.if im honest its only my goblin 500 thats really been affected as thats got a xr4 rx and beastx so it needs sbus really.my other beastx helis have now been reverted back to using standard rx mode with xr8s for now.
its been a bit of frustrating time with radio so far love the flexibilty and telementry but so far its lacking that ''feel'' while flying.hopfully i will get use to it ive only had it since xmas

Just a quick note on the radio stops, even though it's a little off topic:

I learnt to fly without them. It didn't take much time to adjust. Maybe a week on the sim every night.

I looked at it this way:

If you buy a radio that comes with the travel limiting wedges (Spektrum, JR, HiTec) you can usually take them out.
If you buy a radio that doesn't (Futaba, DX6i, Taranis) then you're already accustomed to it and don't have to start looking at ways to block off the extents on the gimbal.

I've never experienced any sort of lag, or mushy feel on the Taranis. I came to it from DSMX with it's so called 11ms latency and noticed no difference. I still fly my 180 on the DX8 and then fly with the Taranis immediately after, and again, I can't tell a difference. Oh, and I took the wedges out of the DX8.
