  • 3G viability question

With all the fuss about the beast X, but it's non-availability, and considering some of the really cheap 2nd hand prices of the Align 3G, I am curious; How much difference is there?

One thing I remember from previous discussions is that it seems most people feel the Beast X tail gyro is better than the 3G (which I think is the same as the 780 if memory serves).

But the bottom line being, is it worth waiting / paying more for the Beast X?

Is it much better to use the internal tail gyro in the 3G vs using a separate gyro?

I'm just thinking it would be interesting to try converting one of my 450s or possibly the Ely.Q and I am seeing the 3G units pretty cheap 2nd hand. But the main point being, if it would just be frustration and perhaps even a potential crash then it would be a false economy and the Beast would be worth the wait and more dough.

Ian Contessa and Duncan Osbourn both use the 3G to good effect, Duncan has tried others, really liked the Heli Command but at the minute he has settled on the 3G on his 700E. Admittedly the tail has a 720 on it but the rest he quite likes. Ian has his whole fleet kitted out with the 3G and he is no slouch when it comes to flying, 450. 550 and 700. I think it took them a while to get the feel to their liking but nontheless they are working fine.

The beast is meant to be in FL at the end of the week and they are hoping that it is in significant numbers and I really like mine. But Sheryl it's your money and the 3G will be fine in my opinion.

I have found the tail gyro is definitely better on the Beast.. though I personally have found the gyro on the 3g a bit hit and miss. It could all depend on the machine, where and how it is mounted to get it how you like it. The 3g on my 450 sport is fantastic.. though I have struggled to get it how I like it on a Beam( The gyro was mounted on the boom mount). I have since mounted it closer to the main shaft and in between the frames, and is a lot better now.

The Beast is very solid and very stable in the hover and how true it flies. I find that the 3g feels more natural..ie flies more akin to having a flybar with added stability. The 3G you can also end up with bounces in some more advanced moves.. though usually gone with a bit of tweaking/reducing gains.

Still would consider a 3g if it is a good price.

Duncan was using the beastx back in September at the champs! I'd be surprised if he's gone back to 3G after sacking it off once already...

Trust me that's what he's flying. He was going through the process of trying them all to see if he could settle on any one brand. he's got the 3G with the 720 on his 700E and the same on the others.

                Hi Sheryl,
As it happens, i've just finnished helping my brother install the 3G on his 600ESP and have everything working fine. Just need a nice day to test fly it now and do the final adjustments on gain settings.
I did read somewhere that some users were putting silicone in the gyro unit to reduce vibration issues so my bro and i opened up the case and decided against using silicone because there are two tabs on the upper case which hold the elevator and aileron gyros. We're not sure if this is an Align upgrade modification from the original gyro to solve the vibration issues but it would seem to be because the pictures i've seen of the siliconed cases dosen't allow space for these tabs. Perhaps someone with any earlier version could confirm this?
We'll let you know how it goes on the test flight

Hi regarding the mod,it may be advisable to have a look over on the freak, most people have cut out the two tabs and filled used E6000,there is plenty info on it and some people are having great success,I have done the mod but have not tried it out yet, also they are now reconing on going 2degrees past what you require on your pitch and cyclic while setting up and backing down said 2degrees after setup as this gives 3G room to move.
As stated read on the freak plenty of info.

                  Hope this helps,
                  Marty.
