  • OS55 won't fire up

Last time out the 55 fired up and died for no reason shortly after...restarted then failed in flight with a bounced auto and found a cracked ElyQ case..wondered about failsafe cutting in..

Fixed up the very minor damage... 2 popped links and the reg case but the darned thing won't fire up..

It's got recent new fuel lines and pressurising the pressure line pours fuel out the fuel line to carb. Pull either needle and fule easily runs out through those seats. Obviously tried new plug and plugs test/glow bright.

If I force fuel into the carb then pull the plug I do get a spray out of the chamber but not with standard needle setting and normal pressure line. Plenty compression - even managed to hydrolock it by forcing fuel into the carb with the hand pump..

Throttle servo working fine and no progam changes.

I'm going to have to pull the engine and dismantle the carb unless anyone has a bright idea?

Have you checked the low voltage output cables from the elyq reg to the glow ignitor, or from yoru remote glow to teh actual glow plug. Just a thought as I've seen this before.

Otherwise, it might be an engine strip to see if there is anything shot, like piston ring, crown etc.

      Hope you find the problem

I've cooked more then my share engines..:-(... looks fine down the plug port and compression with the starter feels too good for that. But as they say' If you have air, fue,l compression and a spark it should run' - just feel it's lack of fuel but looks like engine out time or just fly a different heli (except that the gasser is cutting in flips and the 700 has a weird wag, both 450's need work and the bitz is a bit pricey for trying new stuff on..: = charging 500 batts)

Actually I haven't and I haven't tried firing it with a glowstick (it's charging at the moment) But the remote glow is buzzing well so picking up continuity and enough power to do that bit of it's job..

I'll try it with the glow stick when i get a mo' .. certainly when i checked the plug via a one cell battery it glowed perfectly...

Plugs can glow ok off glow stick but not enough under compression,
I also found with one of my 55s it needs 1.8volts to the glow for it to fire up, but that could be due to a bad remote lead, runs really smooth when started.
55s are notorious for getting and keeping the sweet tuning spot, and rear bearing ware seems to affect the tuning more than others,

I have got the same problem with my 55, tried doing the usual fuel lines etc and it still packs up in flight, think it could be rust on the bearing and particles of it knocking the plug out, so going too fit a new bearing......

I finally got around to pulling the engine ..a real mare to get the liner out of this one. It looks like a stuck ring problem - probbaly some debris from the early bearing corrosion aggravated that? I'll try saking the piston top overnight in wd40 otherwise there's no option i can see apart from picking at the join with a pin..which risks damaging the groove and ring pin?? Unless anyone has a better idea such as heat/cool cycles that might actually work...

we had a similar scenario last week, ended up breaking the pin out and replacing

Might be a silly question, but have you tried a new glow plug in it?

..first thing that was tried wasa different plug. Admittedly that wasn't new (cos i mislaid my card of 12 with moving house - found it yesterday) but both plugs tested fine with a glowstick. Ring is definately stuck and bearing needed a change.
