Don't you need to take that ridiculous £1600 course for commercial work with 'drones'? then on top of that, pay insurance of around £500 plus yearly fee? It's just crazy!
And write an 80 page manual as well before you pass the exam.

I don't know whether the Inspire is more than 7kg, I presume not.

I would have thought all you needed was just your normal BMFA insurance just like flying a heli? And permission from the organizers? I guess not...

Jason will know everything you need for sure, but the base question to answer is are you doing it as a commercial activity or not?

as long its for recreational purposes only - so no contracts, no paid jobs no real publishing (youtube or so doesnt count here )etc - you dont need any license or alike - just to comply with CAA regulations - realistically you dont even need insurance or BMFA but its surely a no brainer in case things go wrong. especially if you monitor the bunch of forums on quads, flight controllers etc you know things will go wrong - the only question is when ... things like flight controller playing up, battery dying in flight, props failures you name it - you dont want to take the costs of a quad of 3KG hitting a car or god forbid hit a person ...

the other cost is for professional purposes - I think its quite expensive but depending on your businessmodel this could also be cheap - depends on how much you make out of it - this however doesnt take away the need to apply for approval to fly in certain places - it also requires that you get checked/certified every craft you work with ... so thats every single quad you use needs to be put forward for testing and certification - surely at a cost - renewal for the license is on an annual basis and requires retesting - so another cost ... but its a business cost ...
