The AHA don't want to release the co-ordinates until they've sorted out all the insurance details with the BMFA, but don't worry, they'll be released in plenty of time. The site is quite close to Newlands.

BTW, I know a lot of people have been thanking me for "getting the field", but it is a team effort. Rex, from Newlands, has been doing a lot of searching and passing the results on to Mark. In turn, Mark has asked me to scout out the promising ones, which I've done, but its not all down to me! And, of course, the AHA committee has to approve the funds, which will be a bit more than we usually pay this time. If it wasn't for the fund raising, we wouldn't be able to do it, so please support the raffle and other fund raising events generously!

What are the chances it will be called off? I need to think about booking a hotel and would probably have to pay up front.

The new field should be OK even if it continues wet. It had been raining immediately before I looked at it, and it would still have been OK to get cars in and out. However, if it rains all over the week-end - well, that's just something we have to take pot-luck on in this country! I know a lot of people were still going even before we got an alternative field, just for the social side of things.

The AHA are committed to making this work, so I don't think it is likely to be called off at this late stage. However, they are still negotiating the insurance and stuff with the BMFA, though this shouldn't be an issue. If you haven't booked yet, I would suggest waiting until the AHA confirm everything is in place. If Newlands are fully booked, I spotted a motel in Kilmington (a couple of miles west of Raymonds Hill on the A35) offering rooms at £49 a night IIRC. There was a big pub next door too!

Cheers Pete, very helpful. I'll take a look at that place as I am sure Newlands will be booked by now.

I'd check Newlands first! One of the reasons Rex was rushing about looking for fields is because he was worried about cancellations. And with all the bad publicity the west country has had because of flooding, etc, I wouldn't be surprised if he's had some non-heli cancellations too!

I really want to go to this but I have a couple of questions if anybody here can answer?

Is the event reasonably kid friendly?
All flyers need an A cert which I don't have, so would there be a decent chance of blagging somebody with a B cert to observe me or whatever they need? beers/fags/cash/sexual favours in return! ( I fly spektrum if it needs to be a buddy box)

Even if I am not able to fly on the day I will most likely still come down just to give the wife and kids a day out somewhere scenic!

                  Cheers

Gazmk2. Charmouth is definitely not kiddy unfriendly, but it depends how much your wife and kids will enjoy being in a field with lots of helicopters for the day. Unfortunately I know that my wife and two girls would probably tolerate it for an hour at most before getting bored. There's usually a tea van selling burgers etc. but not much else YMMV

I don't believe you need to be buddy boxed.

If your family get bored they could always leave you to it and go off for the day. There is plenty fairly close to keep them amused. Lyme Regis has a reasonable beach or Bridport has a few more shops. Also I think its called West Bay has an open air market on Saturdays (may only be in the summer) and a large sand filled adventure play ground. Plus there are loads of other touristy type things to do.

I know for a fact that sending the wife off with both kids on her own while I play with helicopters will go down like a s#@t sandwich! Lol

In fairness though she is sold on the idea and even suggested we bring a picnic so it looks like Sunday might be a go ahead!

I'm still confused as to how someone gets to have a fly without an A certificate?

Hmmm, the nearest station looks like Axminster and it's miles from the field. Travel would be about 4 hours each way not counting taxis to the field and back!
