  • New Radio??

    Hi Everyone

My PCM9Xii has died, left in mothballs too long in the shed I guess. Repair cost is going to be too high especially as it is 35Meg based with the first series module with the flying lead attachment My PCM9X11 was a hand me down and had been repaired a couple of times already.I have an inbuilt distrust of it. It owes me nothing financially, as i got it for nothing. I am thinking to go to the DX8. I am a beginner. So I don't need all the fancy stuff. I could stretch to a DSX9 but is this overkill for the sort of flying I will be doing? Or should I grow into the DSX9

    any advice gladly received

    Many thanks

DX8 (as long as it has the newest software) or 8FG.

Can't go wrong with Futaba! Excellent performance, no bugs and the 8FG looks sweeeeet! I'd go for that

A DSX9 is a 9xii on 2.4 (maybe with a couple of software differences). The build quality of it is miles ahead of a DX8. You should be able to get one for £150-180 used.

Im going to have to disagree with that comment. There were initially issues with build quality (gimbals) but this is now sorted.

Ive used both (though I own a DX8 so am a little biased) and the DX8 didnt feel of any less quality. I havent had any issues with built quality on mine. It was one of the early ones, so went back to HH for the DSMX update and the gimbals were replaced at this time (although there wasnt an issue with mine to that point). Ive had 2+ years of good service from it so far.

Ultimately its going to come down to price, and what feels right in your hands. So much (still) between JR and Spektrum are shared components. It wouldnt surprise me if the stick mechanisms were identical between the two... certainly every other switch is.

Thanks for the advice. I have found a DSX9mk2 tx and Battery for £339 brand New which looks like a great deal and DX8 with three rx for £299. I already have Rx's , could be the JR at that price?
Thanks for the offer Jimmy but I am not sure what I could do with it apart from the feel.
              Many thanks

I don't mean that the JR is any more reliable than the DX8; I mean that the JR feels like a much more high end radio than the DX8. It has a metal case and trim switches, a very large backlit screen (DSX9 2), and overall feels like a more substantial radio.

The sticks are not the same - the DX8 uses bearings whereas the DSX 9 uses brushings. Despite this the gimbals still feel more solid on the DSX9 than the DX8 even if they aren't quite as smooth.

Anyway both are great TXs - imo the DX8 is the radio to have if you want loads of features, whereas the DSX9 or any other JR radio for a better feel. I've had a DSX9 (now using the 11) and used a DX8 quite a bit and to me at least there was a large difference.

Out of the two prices the DX8 with 3RXs seems like the better deal actually - £340 is a bit much as for £60 more you can get a DSX11 from inwoods, which has some really nice features that the DSX9 lacks such as a throttle timer that is toggled by the throttle stick, and SD card slot for updates and the sticks feel a bit nicer too.

As you have RXs you can get a DX8 and battery for £180 also at inwoods http://www.inwoodmodels.com/product_...91a64adf96af39

If you go with a DSX9 then Ben (Jamin_00) has one for sale at £230 that is a great deal http://www.rcheliaddict.co.uk/sale/8...dsx9-mkii.html

I had one of the early dx8 so from personal experence I am not going to recomend it because of that inbuild mistrust you mentioned, but there has been a lot of support from people that use them today and if I am honest it is easier to learn than the 8FG, which i have now.

What I will recomend though is that you get to have a hold of any radio you are thinking of buying because the way they feel in your hands is quite different, the dx8 being a bit thicker which gives a bit more room around the switches but for me I never really felt I had a good hold of it, the 8fg being thinner fits better in my small hands but you can hit the rear switch by accident when going for the one in front, it all a bit of a trade off and whats right for one person may not be right for the next.

Thanks I liked the feel of the PCM9xii , so I guess the DSX9xmk2 will feel similar as they are pretty much the same with 2.4 circuitry added. I am now in a bit of a quandary. I could get the DSX8 for £180 or the DSX9 for £340.
I was under the impression that the timer on the DSX9mk2 could be activated by the throttle? it says it is on the website ? JR Propo | DSX9 2.4GHz DSM2 9-Channel Transmitter

no disrespect but i don't really want a second hand one, whatever I buy will be new, just for peace of mind.... no disrespect to anyone intended.

it can be started by throttle, but not stopped by throttle, which makes it pretty useless :P .

If you are going to spend over £300 on a radio, then it really is worth the £60 extra for the DSX11.

if going JR id spend a bit more and get the DSX11.

but without a doubt, my dx7 will be replaced by a futaba 8fg.

Don't bother with pootaba or fecktrum, JR all the way

Seriously though, go to a shop and hold various makes, and see what u think.

IMO JR feel like much better quality radio. I have used Futaba, and held a DX18 (not my cup of tea at all).

JR11x,DsX11,XG11 etc feel ergonomic to me and the screen and layout is the nuts. I would go for an 11X (if u can stretch get the XG11).

Got my XG11 few weeks ago, has telemetry toys to play with . Paid £600 including a 11 channel DMSS rx and a 8 channel DMSS rx.
