  • DX7 Heli/Aero?

I'm under the impression that there are 2 (or more) version of the DX7. A HELI version and an AERO version. I guess the HELI version is just up our street!

However, I got a mail from a local hobby store that says:

"There are only aero and heli versions of the DX7 in America, in the UK it does both."

So, this means that we get a better version than America, who has to have 2 Tx's if they fly both helis and planes?? I find that hard to believe.

What's the difference between a Heli TX and a Aero TX? Software?

Its probably the same as the Aero and Heli version of my FF7.

The Aero version still does both but has the switches in a different position to the Heli version.

Also I believe the US Heli version does not have the ratchet fitted.

Other than that they are the same in terms of functionality.

    Cheers

So the shop is not 100% correct. The Heli and Aero versions are the same, but for the Ratchet? I read the manual, and it seems this can be fitted/removed...

In the US the switches are in different locations between the Aero & Heli versions, plus the Heli version has the smooth throttle strap fitted and all memories default to 'Heli'. If you get the Aero version the ratchet strap is fitted but the smooth one is supplied in the box and all memories default to 'Aero', as Mark sys, no real issue.

It does seem that if you order a mode 2 set it arrives set up as the heli version.

          Thanks.
So if there is a physical difference to the US version and the UK version, with regards buttons and positions, then that means that the UK has either the Heli version, or the Aero version? (As it's sold as both here). Which version is it then? And are the button placements important?

I think we may get the same setup as the US, although the throttle hold and idle up switches are opposite sides from my PCM9X transmitter, this seems to be US preference. If I was you I'd order a Mode 2 set and get used to the switch location, whatever they happen to be, especially if you are sticking with the DX7 for a good while, its a damn good radio after all.

I've ordered a Mode 2 Heli version from the states.. so should be OK. Everyone says it's good, so I'm pretty looking foreard to getting it... A wee bit worried about the AR7000. I ordered it, as I wanted 7 channels (No the AR6100) for my Trex 450 - but hear it's a tight fit. So a bit worried...

nah, it will be fine, stuff it in the back low down with the aerials poking out backwards, servo tape the second rx to the side of the frames

                  Thanks Ash.
So the main RX bit would fit where my current one is (In the back, below the tail boom, bin in the frame), and the bit with the two wires would maube attach to the bottom of the boom? (Where some people prefer their gyros?)

Out of interest, I can get an AR6100 (with latest firmware) for quite a cheap price. I currently have my Gyro set on my 450, to CH7, so that I can switch between HH and STD mode with a button on the Tx.

As I don't have my heli with me at the office... would I still be able to do this with a 6 Channel Rx.. ie, the AR6100, or do I need 7 channels? I assume I'd need all 7, as I guess the DX7 will have some form of CH7 button that I can flick to enable and disable HH mode on my Gyro...

Also, I've got the Airwolf fuselage of Lenny, and it has retracts, so with all that in mind, I guess my only option is the AR7000 then, right?

                      Hi Craig

I'm using 6 channels on my TRex - throttle, pitch, elevator, aileron, gear, rudder. The 'gear' channel is being used for the gyro remote gain, as its convenient.

If you insist upon using Ch7 for your remote gain, simply program a 100% mix from channel 7 to channel 5 (?) and plug the remote gain into channel 5. That way you can use a 6 channel receiver and still have the gyro gain on channel 7. Trust me, it works! I did that with my Mini-pred.

And yes, I was up at 5am this morning, building on my heli, so that I can finally tell you that its ready to fly!! Well, not just yet, but it will be by the end of this evening.

                        Hi Cralis
If you got the 6100 would you not be able to use channel 5 as I do on my Futaba ?
But then if you want to use retracts then 7 is the way to go

Out of interest why did you get from America? was it that much of a saving?

If so post the link here as Im in the market for a Spektrum,
                        Thanks

This is something else that confuses me...

On my TX, I have a button that says 'CH7'. I have my gyro gain cable plugged into CH7 on the RX, and all is working fine.

So, why do I also have a GEAR switch on my TX? Aren't all the channels used up? What channel would this 'GEAR' button be speaking to on the RX?

I would understand if it said 'GEAR/CH7', because I thought that the landing gear servo would be attached to CH7 in the heli.

Now that I am getting the fuselage with retracts, my understanbding is that I would now have to remove the gyro gain cable from CH7 in the heli, and put it back into 4 (or 5.. which ever it was), and then put the gear servo into CH7. Now, would I use my GEAR switch on the TX? Not sure how it knows not to 'listen' to the CH7 switch, and rather use the gear switch.

                          Agghh!

Gyro gain is usually assigned to channel 5 (rudder being channel 4).
Channel 7 then becomes useful as an auxiliary channel for such things as landing gear retracts, or, in my case, remote gain for my governor so I can assign headspeeds from the Tx.

                            Cheers,
