Jamie, I am sure I remember Bert Kamerer saying about engine temps somewhere. I'll have a look around and see if I can find it

Temperature alone isnt a very good indication of mixture. Sure backplate temp is a nice final check but nothing comes close to getting to know what your engine sounds like when its on song and adjusting it yourself either through a servo operated needle or by landing it.
Because of this the dx8 telemetry is only really useful as a "theres something wrong, land now" device rather than a competitive advantage.

OK, I emailed Bert Kammerer yesterday, and I have a nice long reply from him today. (thanks Bert)
As been said already on this thread, around 100 deg C is the optimum temp for IC engines, and should not exceed (220) 105 deg C. This should be read right below the head where the head meets the the crank case. The temp being measured is going to be different depending on how it is measured because of the type of surface, and readers being calibrated differently for different types of materials.
Berts suggestion is to tune your engine by ear as we do now, and see what the temp reading is on your telemetry. Now set your alarm for 5 degC higher.Henseleit TDR
