Yes, nitro is a bit cheaper, esp if you crash.

No, you cannot just go to a local field. If public, that's a no-no with nitro, if private, that's ok with the owners permission.

You need BMFA membership for their insurance, go to a club to watch, join the club if you like what you see, learn from them - and very def from this site . The club will require you to have insurance & will keep you safe from channel interference.

If you go off flying on your own you may interefre with another flyer within a couple of miles, or him you = crashed helis or injury.

David, I hadn't really considered going nitro ?! Is that wise for someone who is new, I thought I might have to stick with electric until my skill vastly improves.

Anybody else here start with nitro ?

Electric helis are relatively new. I expect most on here started on Nitro.

In my opinion, the best Tx you can get for under £300.

If you are going to join a club find out what make of TX they fly. At our club all but about two people fly Futaba, thats about 50 of us. It makes it easy to get help with radio setup if more people know and understand your radio.

Yep,I second that- Dx7 is the way to go, flying between the showers today and occasional gust of wind-no probs, actually prefer to use neck strap though,balances better,, As an afterthought, I part exchanged ALL my 35mhz gear at my local model shop today(Futaba FF9 PCM- FF7 AND FF8 tranny's
plus shultz recievers etc -got lipo's and blades for my trex 600 and a credit note for further purchases,, Anyone interested in a 35mhz frequency monitor that is no longer required???

The DX7 is a really good idea if you want to fly a small electric without going to a club field. however a small electric is harder to fly. The crash cost is less (unless you bend a £40 battery).
Early electrics were pretty difficult to get to fly properly but a trex450/x400/mini titan/dragonus will fly very well and you can probably get lots and lots of hovering time in your back garden (these are too big to fly indoors except in a sports hall). however in a heavily populated area you risk encountering someone else doing the same near you on the same frequency, or a neaby park flyer cheapy on your frequency so the DX7 is a very good idea.
To get a trex450 type heli fixed up and 2-3 lipos will cost very simular money to a raptor30 though (its not worth economising on things like the gyro). When you tip your trex into the flowerbed it will cost less than £30 to fix. Its will cost a lot more than that with a raptor 30/50.

When you want to do the more advanced flying then the small electric is quite a bit more difficult because it gets too far away very easily and in a big open space it feels the wind a lot. The bigger nitro heli beats the small electrics then. You really have to go to a recognised flying site with a big heli.

Stick time is very important when you learn. Once you are comfortable to hover about without crashing you need to do a lot of flying so it is natural and not scary. To do that with a trex600 (bigger electric) you will need several £150-250 batteries to cycle through. With a nitro you can be up and flying again in just a few minutes to fuel up.

The phoenix sim is excellent by the way. Great for keeping current in the bad weather.
