  • Spektrum DX7 backlight mod

I see tons of threads on the net about people who have added a nice looking backlight and also a LED that shows the tx is on.

Is there anyone here in the UK that does these mods as a service?

Or am I opening another can of worms here about how this is pointless and will void the waranty and end my insurance cover and end life on earth as we know it?

Sorry, that was said very tongue in cheek and not meant to offend anyone I am still learning about all this flying melarky. I am not used to people being so particular about mods and changes, it seems when it comes to surface based RC sports at least mods are where it's at!

I need one of those smiley's that duck's behind the wall everytime I post it seems.

If you are worried about leaving it on accidently and feel the need for an LED to give you a visual warning, why not just get a Lipo as a spare battery.... Sorry i couldnt resist a quick poke in jest at ya!

Seen and read a few posts where others have done various LED mods to illuminated the LCD panel and also adding one to indicate that its powered up, but not seen any service offered in the UK to do such a mod.

Only having a bit of fun with ya dude!

I know only too well about the RC Car thing. In the 80's I raced 1/8 offroad and 1/8 circuit. Did the whole trapesing around the country doing the BRCA series and Nats. I was lucky enough to get some backing from a local model shop, but it all became to serious and no fun anymore. I gave it up and just did some indoor 1/10 electric for fun and got into planks and then helis, cos I missed the nuts and bolts!

The Lcd screen would be great for my night flying.
from what I have seen it look safer then putting a lipo in.
                cheers Paul

I will ask a mate who is in to electronic's and does computers for his job.
                    plus he has 3 dx7's

If he is an electronics engineer I don't see a problem Paul.

As I know nothing about this subject I dare not enter the circuit board with my soldering gun.

Would appreciatte it if you let me know how he goes on.

I haven't had the DX7 apart for a while but in theory it isn't a problem. Probably a couple of wide angle 3mm LEDs, one on each side of the LCD module with the appropriate resistor so that the LEDs have enough current to drive them to a suitable brightness but not too much so that battery life becomes a concern. Then connect to the -ve and +ve after the switch.

I would need to have a look inside as some LCD modules are made up with a metal frame that would prevent light getting in but if it's been done elsewhere it shouldn't be a problem

I'm tempted to have a go myself

EDIT: A quick surf revealed this so it is possible.
Current consumption looks a little high for me. I think I would run the LEDs a little lower to conserve batt life and so that I wouldn't ruin my night vision and I wouldn't bother with a dimmer IMHO.

                            I have a spare DX7.

You fancy having a go before we start on the DX7SE Lee.

Some more info here from Helifreak...
Backlit DX7? They exist! Video.... question is, HOW. - Page 2 - HeliFreak

but sadly no actual "how to do it". They also use a EL panel behind the screen by the looks of it not LEDs. That would give a more consistent light and look better
                              Cheers, Lee.
