  • Latest 2.4GHz Radio equipment

Just want to know your views
I've into Model Flying for over thirty years using from the single channel 27Mhz rubber band escapement to the latest 2.4GHz Radio equipment and only 4 time in that time I've had to get either the Tx or Rx repaired "Futaba".
Over the last Year had to send back for repair "Spektrum"

    1 AR9000 Aileron channel dead
1 AR7000 Gear "Gyro gain" dead
    1 AR7000 would not bind
    1 AR7000 completely dead
1 AR7000 LED flashed on vibration
2 Remote receivers LED flashed when pressed or vibration

    On a average I log 1/2 to 1 hour a week

      You must have had some bad luck im afraid. So far I have had;

      3 x DX7 Tx's
      1 x DX6i Tx's
      1 x AR6100 Rx's
      3 x AR7000 Rx's
      1 x AR9100 Rx

...and I have only had one problem with the DX6i, which was a fault with the batch and was well documented online. Horizon Hobby had it sorted within a week

They always get my dosh as i beleive you get what you pay for. My lastest 10C is excellent.

I had to send back an AR7000 RX ages ago. It would not bind, I got a new one. Other than that I haven’t had any other problems with my Spektrum gear.

One thing that we have discovered at our club is that you can instantly damage a Spektrum receiver when you try to bind it. If you bind it as per the instructions then you won't have any problems - i.e. put the bind plug into the battery channel and the battery directly (i.e. no switch) into one of the flight channels.

If you put the bind plug into charge lead that comes off your switch then you may well instantly destroy the receiver. It seems to depend on the type of switch. The genuine Spektrum ones and the genuine JR heavy duty ones are fine, but there are some other switches (dare I say imitations?) which always cause this problem.

Personally, I only ever use the JR heavy duty switches (the ones with the black and silver cover plate) and have never killed a Tx this way, but club mates have had this issue and have even tested it to the point where several Rxs were damaged in one day for the sake of finding out what the problem was.

The thing is that the first thing you do when you set up a new Rx is to bind it, so if you're binding through a dodgy switch then you have instantly killed it, and would probably assume that the Rx was faulty.

The good news is that Spektrum do change them new for old pretty much without question, and we have changed them over the counter directly through our model shop which saves waiting for a new one to come through the post. All they ask is that you right a short note to say what's wrong with the damaged one, and by 'short' I mean something like "will not bind".

It might be the safe way, but it's a pain in the arse way. Whenever you want to rebind you have to pull your receiver installation out. What's the point of a dedicated battery connector if you can't use it as such all the time?
