I bought a Buzzfly and straight away realized I needed a Phoenix and a TX.
My local model shop 'Pegasus Models (Norwich)' convinced me to buy a DX7 which he sold me without the receiver for a good price.

My thinking is - it spreads the load and lowers the risk of the wife going too mad when you tell her you want to buy a new heli.

DX7 is a nice peice of kit + I can get used to 6 channel before involving real hardware.

Pegasus made one good point, would you trust a £65 pound TX with a £400 + heli !!!!!!!!

I recently got a 12FG which is why my 7C is up for sale. The 12FG can do more things than I can get my head around at the moment (its actually making me a coffee right now, then walking the dog!) Seriously, I got it because I enjoy the technical side of the hobby, I love playing around with new things, I missed some of the functions of my old 9C and I wanted a top end radio. But most of all I liked the feel of it.

Now, as far as not needing it is concerned I have a similar comparison: Apart from helis I also race Motocross. I'm pretty sure that I could give the majority of you my fully prepped race bike, whilst I rode a clapped out piece of crap and still lap you, probably many times. Would I suggest you buy the basic kit, bike etc just cos your a beginner - of course not! You get the best you can afford and the one you want and grow into it.

Theres nothing wrong with 'all the gear no idea' as long as your having fun.

        Thanks Smoothy, Pedro!!

Just been looking at FF7's and DX7's online. Little confused about servo's and receivers....

I have the Buzz Fly SE and Phoenix is in the post. Im plan to sim for at LEAST six months hopefully hovering within that time, thus do I realy need a receiver and servo's or should I opt for the basic Tx. If I do this, will I pay 'extra' for these items when I eventually need them?

        What to do... decisions, decisions
        Trex 250 ... won in 'Jamin_00' raffle! .... *Traded*
        Trex 450SE V2 .... **Sold**

Buzz Fly SE 2.4 .... **For Sale**

With a new 7C or 10C you will get 4 x 3152 digital servos, which are pretty much the standard for entry level digitals. You cannot use the servos you get with Spektrum sets for heli use. There have been lots of threads about this in the past. I'm sure some have used them, but most on here would suggest not.

If you go for Spektrum then get a normal Dx7 (not the SE as it has no trainer port for the sim) and buy the servos seperately.

I have only been flying for 3 weeks and thanks to Phoenix I can hover and land the BuzzFly nicely (Tail & Side on only). Nose on needs a lot more practice with Phoenix.

Starting with a good TX now will be 1 less item to get your head around when 'we' do progress.

              Thanks again!

OK. Think I will defo choose between the FF7 or the DX7. I will opt for a set without servos, but will request the combo receiver. When I eventually use the Tx for real heli flight I will invest in a capable servo set nearer the time when I choose my first 'proper' heli as opposed to the sub-micro Buzz Fly which I currently own.

              To infinity and...

The FF7 2.4 will do everything you need even for a 90 size heli, and gets my vote. It has things you won't get with the DX7 eg a timer on throttle stick (useful for electric models) and the ability to be changed to any Tx stick mode.

You can get the FF7 with a 617FS Rx for about £200 now - the main beauty of Futaba for me is the receivers are one-piece with two aerials easily positioned on your model at 90degrees as they have a longer coax section -- as opposed to the Spektrum's main Rx and satellite unit that have to positioned at 90degrees to each other, each with their own two short aerials.

The DX7 itself is great though, so it's a tough call (trying to be unbiased) - I suggest trying both out in a shop and making your own mind up, it might even come down to the feel of the set or the fact that the FF7 has more spikey / grippy stick ends that swings it for you.
