  • talon 90 take two

ok, after a bad talon experience the first time round, I now have another brand new unit FOC from castle..... I pondered about selling it, but have decided to give it a second chance.

Its going on the 550 to replace the std align 70a (which has worked flawlesly until a battery wire came off yesterday, luckily on the ground !)

The mounting is the question here..... It will go on at a silly angle, right at the front, without extending the mx motor wires, which are pushed through a hole in the frame thats a bit small for them tbh. It works like this but looks iffy, and the motor wires are tight on the frame which is not great either. Anywhere near the front and its out of the main airflow as well. The nicest and neatest fit is on the side in a more conventional manner, but this requires soldering extensions to the motor wires (not really an issue)

I just wondered how others have done it on there 550 v1/v2, whats the most popular method then ?

    trex 550 (HC3SX)

    trex 600 nitro le (beastx)
    compass 6HV (Spirit)
    dx8.....

its not my dog by the way.

I would sell it mate if you can. Porscheboy had his fail twice in a month causing a lot of damage. He's not the only one.

Have a read of my lonnnggg recent thread mate. Suffice it to say the brand new one was 2mins into the flight when it packed in, I auto'd down, checked it all, throttled up and poof, cloud of smoke and the quickest cano removal/battery disconnect you have ever seen accompanied by a hand warming experience. CC sent me another one and that is sat on the bench.....

My first failure maybe is open to question, but the brand new straight off the production line failing and catching fire within 2 mins of its maiden flight rather put me off (despite great customer service from CC), hence I have a brand new one still in the packaging sat on my bench and a Konny Jive 100+ under my battery tray.

One of the guys at SHH likes his one so much he wants mine as a spare which I have agreed a very low price for.

Its a tricky one, some folks have no issue, but like yourself, others do have problems. I would love to put on the jive 100lv but its just not in budget and never wil be.

I have been running a scorpion backup gaurd with the std align esc, but if my poor memory serves me correctly, there is a reason to not use it with the talons ???? am I correct on this hunch ?

You're dead right, there must be hundreds possibly thousands of satisfied Talon90 users out there, I am just of the opinion that once bitten twice shy and luckily I was in the position to get a konny jive, but to be honest I was also looking at a YGE and another make (can't think of it right now).

As to the scorp back up, I have not heard either way. Sorry mate.

I ran the talon 90 for a while and have used castle esc's on a number of helis. Personally never had a problem with them and I like some of the logging info (not on the talon), just never got the governor quite right. I understand people's concerns as there clearly have been some issues. However I reckon the majority of users have a good experience overall. As the cheapest of the quality ESC's I reckon there are a lot more castle units knocking about than YGE or kontronik and therefore you hear about the issues. If you run a separate BEC or rx battery then failure isn't necessarily the end.

One alternative route I recently went down and which I am very very pleased with is the YEP ESC from HK and a gryphon Polaris BEC which I have been using on my logo 400se. For me it is a fantastic ESC and almost certainly just a YGE rebranded. It has a great governor and runs cool and simple to setup with a little prog card. The combo in total was about the same as a secondhand talon.

Yes- there was a thread on HF about it. Apparently, the Talon doesn't have a diode to stop current from the BUG arming the ESC if you do your startup sequence wrong.

FWIW - I have a Talon90 in my Goblin500 with no issues whatsoever. As others have mentioned on HF, I have it upside down to improve airflow. I also have a CC Edge 130 in my 550.

A secondhand 100lv will set you back about 150

On anything smaller than a 550 running 550 blades I would not even give it a second thought, and just use it. Its the 550 with 550 blades where you begin to question things a bit.... well you do when porscheboy and discoferret chip ! ! (I had just started the process of fitting this morning)

so, going with the notion I am using it, how do you brave folks mount yours on your 550...... ? on the side with motor extensions or weird jaunty angle up front with motor wires pushed through the frame to avoid the extensions ?

I have mine mounted inside the frame under the motor, looks much neater than strapping it to the side (my old 70amp Align one was strapped to the side). Its real snug there but it looks neat, whenIi get home from work ill take some photos for you.

                          Here you go;

The first photo is quite deceptive, the motor is about 4mm clear of the Talons heatsink, this is obviously fitted without its plastic cage and just far enough back that when you push the canopy clip into place it doesn't hit the capacitors. It doesn't get hot as the hole in the canopy channels air right through to it and the motor, even more so when flying backwards. I've done 27 flights with it so far and it's been great

I had mine mounted on the side. Well over 200 flights and no issues at all.

Question did you lengthen motor wire when you fitted Talon below motor, as mine on BL600mx motor are not long enough.
