  • 6amp reg on 700 heli

    hi

is it ok to run a 6amp align reg on my trex 700?

on my other helis i run 20amp becs but this one came with the heli, so not sure if it is ok to use.

for sport flying yes any more than that proberly no. depends on what servos you are using.
I use the kontronik heli-jive built-in bec 5amp, on a logo 550 , logo 690 and a protos max v2 800 with no problems so far, all fitted with align servos , so they are not super power hungry.

One way to see how it holds up is to fit an Opti Ultraguard (which is a good idea anyway). If the Opti guard is being triggered a lot then the BEC is probably not quite up to the task.

The Ultraguard is a good suggestion. I'd say that a 6A regulator is marginal unless you tend to fly pretty gently and have servos at the lower end of the current draw spectrum. I have no doubt it will work but if you get one of those "Oh s**t" moments, it could all end fairly abruptly.

            Hey Buddy.

In a word, no. 6 amps is not enough, even on a 550 I would not use a 6 amps continous regulator.

Actually you will find it's not necassarily the servos nowadays that draw the amps, but the FBL controller controlling the servos that in turn makes them pull more amps. I know a Vbar is much less power hungry than an Align Gpro for example.
Out of interest what FBL unit are you running?

An OptiGuard should protect you yes, but in effect you are only masking over a potential problem.

The Opti guard in this case is also a diagnostic tool. If it is never triggered then the BEC is holding the voltage well, if it is being triggered then obviously the BEC is not able to keep up. So if he's always seeing that flashing LED (or solid red on the board) it means - get a bigger BEC. The other option would be some kind of telemetry sensor.... but.... if you're gonna fit the Ultraguard anyway it will kinda do that job. Obviously the other option would be just to start from the position that 6 amps isnt enough and replace it before even flying.

FWIW - I was very concerned about the amp demands of the servos on my Triabolo as they're rated for a crazy amount of torque but the Kosmik logs usually show about 7 amps. But... I also don't fly aggressively (and sometimes I wonder if it might happen that a lower torque rated servo might sometimes pull more amps because it could be stalled easier than a servo with an overkill torque rating)
