  • Shortening servo leads, which end to cut?

Something I've never felt the need to do before, but as the 2 rear cyclic servos sit about 3cm from the FBL on the Dune I think I will shorten the servo leads for a tidy job.

So is it easier to cut the lead and crimp/solder new connectors at the plug end or remove it internally in the servo and resolder it that end?

Specifically they are MKS High Voltage Brushless Servo HBL665 servos, not had the cases off for a nosey inside yet.

If your soldering skills are good then do it at the servo end.

If not then crimp a new plug on the other end. There is a knack to crimping so practice if you've not done it before.

Cut and crimp, lay the wire with the stripped cores in your left hand with the orange or wight for Futaba furthest away from you, this is the way you will crimp the new pins on. With the pins upside down, ie the core and insulation tabs uppermost crimp the new pin on in this orientation. Do this for all 3 cores, this way you don't end up twisting the core because you've crimped them 180 degrees out. The new plug will now just slide on in the correct orientation, use the back of a craft knife in the slots to pull the cores home, they click when they are so.

I purchased these tools for the job, very expensive but well worth the money.

A few practice runs and I can now make new leads or shorten leads perfect.

Well I think with my soldering skills I'll risk crimping new pins on :-)

Anyone know who sells them? Don't seem too common.
