  • Futaba tail servo experts help wanted

Looking for some advice please. My Futaba S9254 tail servo has just stopped working. The Trex 600n has been on the bench with engine trouble and having fixed all that, when I was cheking over the electrics I found the tail servo on power up just makes a couple of quick movements like usual, but then nothing after that. The gears sound ok, and all other servos are working fine.

Are there any simple tests to establish if it is beyond repair? Could re-binding help? Have new JR 9dsx9 and don't know how to bind it as club member set it up for me.

Any help/advice will be gratefully received

Bindings easy with the dx9 all you do is take the battery lead out of the rx battery port and plug it into any of the other ports not being used then plug the bind plug into the battery port then on the back of the dx9 there is a green push switch before turning the anything on press the green button and hold it in then turn on you tx and rx together hold the green button for a few seconds then let go if they bind you will have a solid red light on the rx once bound remove the bind plug the put your battery back in the bat port

Simple step to check the tail servo - plug it straight into the receiver without going through the gyro and wiggle the rudder control stick. Quick and easy test that works with the 9254 servo.

          Problem recurs!!

Guys thanks for previous advice on this issue, but the problem has recurred. This time when I powered up the rx the tail servo would not move. I found the tail blade grips jammed (over extended, probably in the boot of the car) and released them. The servo now doesn't move unless helped a little by hand, so obviously I have a problem. I have tried re-binding to no avail (not that it should help?) so I wonder if powering up the servo with the tail jammed could have caused the servo to pack up?

The servo sounds ok when moved by hand but just not moving under command. Should I strip it and check the gears? Servo doesn't move when connected to rx with the gyro disconnected either.

          Any advice please?

If the servo (Futaba 9254) is u/s, any suggestions for replacement? My gyro is Futaba GY 520 on a Trex 600n

          Many thanks in advance

I would strip it down and have a look at the gears. But before you do, try it on a servo tester if you have one, or perhaps one of you flying mates might have one. It could be that if its been powered up and the tail blades have been locked in position it might have damaged the motor but a servo tester will prove that

              Cheers

Opened servo and found some small white plastic swarf bits but can't see any real damage to any of the gears. Tried powering up servo without any of the gears attached and the motor just runs continuously, should it do that or does that indicate a motor problem? I don't have a servo tester.

Yes that's good, sounds that the motor is ok. The plastic swarf bits are probably from the gears if the tall was locked when the servo was turned on, so you will need to buy a gear set for a S9254 these are the same as a S9253 I think, they are about £6

                  Cheers

ok thanks for that, will order gears and some grease. All I need then is a diagram of how to put them back!
