  • 780 gyro again

Hi all, what is it with this blooming thing ? !! .

So about Xmas time I got my t Rex 500 combo (first proper heli)

Built and on test test flight ( not by me ) tail wagged like a jelly on steroids ! Played with gain to no avail.

Turned the gyro to 45° as recommended by someone it had worked for , and yes on next test flight it was fine :-)

And for 2 flights after it was fine , then I got my t Rex 600 so its been a bit left . Still out it came on the flying holiday seeing as I'd smoked the clutch on my 600 after the hot start

Checked it over an plugged in and spooled up , off the ground and it was like a waggy wag thing again ! Took it back to the caravan where my mate checked everything mechanical , all was smooth and belt was fine. Took it down the field then next evening and not only did it wag it turned 45° and back again and scared the crap out of me !!

So yesterday I took it up to the flying site where my mate fitted a 750 to it, there was no mode 2 test pilot available so had to do it myself ( again shaking like a leaf) all I can say is wow it transformed it , and it was a real confidence booster.
It shall no longer live in its case and will be flown on a regular basis .

So , I emailed heli guru who I got the heli off to see if he can send the faulty gyro back to align but not had reply yet , bank hold and all.

Anyone else had problems with 780's ?

I am keeping my fingers crossed but I have one on my 600. I have had no trouble at all with it.

Got a 500 last year and came with one of these god forsaken things. Its done 6 flights and spent the rest of the time on the shelf. May get a quark on there but more than likely when I find somewhere to fly i'll just get a FBL unit stuck on there and have done with it. Only got the plastic version 500 so nothing really lost in getting a new head to go FBL

GP780 best fix is peel from heli, open bin lid and drop it in.

Yep , think you you may be right but it still means I have to pay for a new gyro when its not my fault . Its been playing up from day one and I kept heliguru in formed straight away . I went for Align as I was told they were great, don't get me wrong I now love the 500 but I'm hoping they might replace the gyro as its obviously faulty . Gonna give HG a chance to get back if not I'm going to Align . I just hate being ripped off.

I know exactly how you feel had exactly the same problem with my 450,eventually gave in and replaced with a quark(50 quidish) and may I say the best purchase (heli related) I have made

I've been flying with a $14 Assan 250 and it outperforms the GP780 on my 450. In fairness to the 780 on my Gaui 425 which is a very smooth running machine it was good, but a vibe of any sort just sends it nuts.

Had email from Johnathan at Heliguru today to send it back , so it could be checked. So fingers crossed it might get sorted.

I had 14 months of trying to suss out WTF the problem was with my GP780 gyro on my 450 Sport. In the end someone suggested I put the next size up of tail servo on it and it has been sweet as a nut ever since. Absolutely transformed it and it's been solid as a rock. So in my experience, and the experience of a number of others, the Gyro itself isn't at fault, but for some reason, the Gyro tends to only behave when it's on the next bigger tail servo. No idea why!

I know this is a bit of a dated thread now but I know people will still see it when they search about the gyro, I've got 2 of the GP780s.

I had one on my 600 pro prior to going FBL and on my 450 pro, It was never fantastic on either however today I went about setting my 450 up in rate mode to hover hands off. It now holds very well, I was also able to up my gain a bit which i was quite surprised at and doesn't have any wag.

It may not be suitable for 3d but I'm not at that level yet, I know that it's able to do a loop now without the tail kicking slightly which used to be pretty scary sometimes.

The manual says nothing about setting it up this way but it's go to be worth trying before binning it.
