  • servos tail or cyclic totally confused

    Hi All.

So looking for some servos to replace the cheapo ones on my 250 that failed me the other day causing a crash I started with Emax ES08D for all 4. Had massive tail wag problems so changed the tail to a MKS D95i which got it flayable. Then one of the cyclic s seemed to fail or strip causing a crash.

So this is the list I came up with to try and compare.

So the MKS545 seems to be the obvious winner. Fast strong and same price as the other "good" brands. So do a google to see if they are any good and find they are listed as a tail servo.

    So the question....

What is the difference between a tail and cyclic servo ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??

    Cyclics.jpg

Want to try and get ordered so I can get it flying again. The MKS DS95 is a obvious option for performance but the "cheap clone project" very quickly has got out of hand and this would push it way over the cost of a align kit so a little hesitant to splash out that much if not needed. The MKS 545 seem like a good option spec wise...

    Any advise appreciated.

    Cheers

Can't tell you much about the specific servos you mention as I don't fly 250 size helis but as a general rule, tail servos have to be very fast and don't require as much torque whereas cyclic servos need much more torque but lightning fast speed is less of a priority (although it's still the case that faster is better).

Tail servos are generally faster that 0.06sec to 60 degrees

I'm putting MKS DS545s on a T-Rex 450 cyclics. IIRC. they're metal geared, and comparable torque to other swash servos.

Yes, the do say 'tail servo' on them.

I've not used them in anger, yet.

One thing to bear in mind is that they seem to have a lower max frame rate than other 'digital' servos. (75Hz, IIRC). Your FBL will need to be set to use this lower frame rate.

I am using a 3GX unit I had spare. As far as I can see I didn't think there is any way to change the Cyclic servos just the tail. Maybe that was the problem with the other ones.

Thanks but living in China at the mo so freight wouldn't be worth it.
The JR is similar specs to the MKS DS545, a lot heavier and nearly double the price.
I think unless there is a reason to go for a more expensive servo than the DS545 it looks to be the best value for money.

Yes, the DS545s are cheap, light, strong & fast - but do seem to have an issue (which I think is low frame rate).

                Eg HobbyKing Forums - MKS DS530 + DS545 servos

I'm plugging mine into an SK540 (as swash, set as 'analog'), and on the bench they seem fine so far. If you can't control the swash frame rate on the 3GX, they may not be useful.

I've also got DS95 & DS92A+ swash servos. Both seem excellent; both are heavy-ish (95 more so); DS92A+ seems to have brutal current requirements.

Align DS410M or DS415M will be compatible with the 3GX - but not in the same league as the MKS servos (though wer'e not yet sure about DS545s...)

Interesting but that forum post was 3 years ago. Not sure if they have updated since then. Out of all the servos available there are a group at 50 odd quid a set of 3. Surly one of them will do the job? Spending 100 quid on a set of cyclics for a 250 sounds a little over the top. I do want to make sure it is right just having trouble justifying it. Haven't started off too good with the 250 and not sure I really like it. Want to be fair on it and make sure I get it fying as good as it should be able to.

Could get the Align or Savox ones but the specs dont look so good on them and they dont seem to get a very good rap.

It actually fly ok on the cyclic with the Emax 3 quid servos until one failed. Biggest issue has been the tail but seem 90% on top of that I think.

                  Cheers

The Hi Tech seem to be the most popular but certainly not the fastest by a long way. .14 @ 4.8v. Is that going to work ok for a 250 FBL? Guess it works for others.
