  • Is align 3GX as bad as it appears?

Align kit is usually reliable, but I see these 3GX units for sale 2nd hand unused everywhere.

I've read some horror stories but many seem to be power related.
    Are they really that bad?

I don't think they're as bad as you hear no. There are quite a few in the club and they seem to work fine

I moved from an sk720 to a 3gx in my 450, and I don't enjoy flying it anymore. I'm swapping it out for a beasts as soon as I can.

Well I have 3 gx and Beast x and to be honest I cant tell the difference in performance between either of them, never had a tip over on take off, both work fine, in fact in the wind the 3gx to me seems more stable
They are on Trex600, and a Trex700, I will certainly not be put off buying another 3gx
Had one crash with the 3gx, the power lead became disconnected from the unit which was totally my fault. did some good 3d before it crashed!!!!!

I don't think it makes as much of a difference on larger helis - I remember when people were sticking to the old align 3G for 600s and 700s but on 450s weren't getting them.

I probably haven't setup my 3GX well enough, but I've given it enough time... tried my own settings (v2.0), beginner settings (1.2) and "leon luke's" settings (1.2) and they all are bad in their own kind of way. I don't see why I should have to spend hours setting it up to fly well when I can get a beastx and know it will fly well first time.

I had a 3GX on my 550 before changing it to a BeastX. As previously mentioned, I could not feel any difference that I could give one or the other any advantage. So for me they were pretty equal... I did however change to a BeastX because I had that on my Protos and like to have the same. Also, I guess I felt a little scared that it should be unsafe...but I never saw any sign of this at all, it is probably a bit exaggerated in forum threads etc.

Note that I am not an expert in flying, doing basic flying, basic 3D like inverted/backwards flying but no piro maneuvers. I hear a lot of people talking about pre-comp for piro consitency etc. I cannot comment on if it can handle these etc.

As the price on these units are pretty low (used units), maybe you should give it a test if you dare? Who dares wins....sometimes.

From what I have seen & herd there much the same the 3gx and the beastx. But the beast is more plug & play the 3gx will be as good but will take more to get it there.

No they are not. The Beast is far superior imo. I have used both a lot and the difference is night and day by my senses (which are very highly tuned) I have got rid of all my 3gx and so has everyone i fly with. But some people are easier to please which is fine. But i find its performance unacceptable. It seems is just does no matter all that much to people and they can't tell the difference anyway.

But then again.... i have read people say they cannot tell the difference between the v3 and v4 Phoenix?!? Which is obviously ridiculous and those folk probably just don't pay as much attention

Why don't you fly one red so you actually have a platform to comment on the matter . Everyone is entitled to an opinion though of course. I just hate to see new folk suffer the same crap we have from the unit

I think some people are just unlucky with the 3GX. A few guys here fly that unit quite successfully, although most use the Bx. I've flown a 3GX heli once, but it was my mates brand new 600 Pro so didn't hammer it too hard (for obvious reasons) so couldn't really put it through its paces. I'd like to try it again now with a few piro manoeuvres to see how it copes.

I'm sure the 3GX is just as capable as the BeastX - you just need to look at the Alan Zsabo videos. The BeastX just makes those same moves easier to do without all the small corrections - it's much more predictable.

                            Hey.

Red3 has flown one, mine on my 550 when I was flying them. Bear in mind that just because you didn't get on with the 3GX doesn't mean someone else won't either. There are so many parameters that effect FBL performance that perhaps in your particular circumstances all contributed to you not getting the model flying right.

The fact of the matter remains that all FBL units can be effected if the setup isn't right, the beastx is easier to setup quickly, but based on performance once setup correctly, there is no difference between this unit and the 3GX. The only difference could be flight feel, some have said the 3GX is more of an aggressive flight envelope than the beast. But that's going by what I've been told and read.

There have been a handful of bad 3GX units, but these are mass produced and so the odd bad apple creeps in unfortunately. I've recently seen the odd not so good beastx report in recent times, as more people explore the various units. Most soon go to a vbar it seems.

Setup and settings make or break a good 3GX setup, unfortunately I cannot recommend Leon Lukes settings ad they felt horrible and not locked in. I can my own ;-) but then I would, however many now fly them and with simple tweeks have their models flying to their own personal taste well.
                            .
