  • Replacment gear set vs new servo after 200 flights?

I have noticed quite a bit of play in the main blades of my 6hv which is making it hard to maintain a single altitude in a hover. when the servos are active I can turn the blade grips 1/2-1 deg (unflown 7hv as no play at all). The slop is only present in the servo eg the arms of the servo move up and down by 1mm ish. I presume this is the gear set wearing out?
Do I spend £130 on 3 ds620s or £60 on 3 sets of gear replacments?

How long do these servos tend to last or is it a safer bet to replace the hole servo? On a bit of a buget as the 7hv as put a hole in the wallet but Id hate to put new gears in to servos who's lives are at there end!

    Any advice would be great.

    Many thanks
    Tom

are you sure its the gear set and not the horn on the servo.

    How old are the servos?
How often is this heli used?
    has it been crashed?
    All the best
    Tony.

Servos are 1 year old with around 200 flights. Averages 6 flights a week ish. Never been crashed. I wil check the horn for movement on the spline ( good idea!).

        Thats the 610 way.

After three flights they seem to have a deadband in the servos. It doesnt seem to get much worse though as time goes on.

If you that concerned about it, get some BLS451s

          Hmmm interesting.
I have MKS 950/990 in the 7hv. If they wourk out well I may put some in the 6hv. There goes another £200+

So you think new sets wont make a difference?

After 20 or so flights, I have personally never seen a set of 610s without a deadband. They still work fine though, FBL anyway.

I had a similar problem a while ago and replaced the gears in my 610's which competely iliminated the slop, its worth checking your servo cases too as the slop can come from where the gears are held in the cases too.
Even my 451's developed slop, and i changed the plastic gears hoping that would cure it but it didnt.

Can running servos at 8v have any effect on the life of a servo and its gears, as my 451's were run at 8v for a while and they seemed to get sloppy pretty quickly?

I wouldn't even think about replacing a servo when it gets to 200 flights, maybe over 1000 I would change the tail servo, possibly cyclic but BLS ones (Futaba BLS and JR BLS) I would run even longer.

My Futaba 451's have slop in them, they have none when new but as said above after not too many flights they develop gear slop which doesn't seem to grow much if at any at all.

Bit of slop in the servos doesn't hurt anything as most of the time they are under load - it would be a better investment to make sure that the links from the servo horn to the grips are slop free.

But if they have been crashed it might be a good idea to replace them sooner.
